Picnic Around Your Fireplace FIREPLACE PICNIC with make-ahead cheeae-stuffed rolla. By CECILY BROWNSTONE Associated Press Food Editor A FIREPLACE PICNIC is per fect for an Indian Summer supper! Makes these wonderfully delici ous stuffed rolls in the morning, wrap them in aluminum foil and refrigerate them until the gang ar rives. Then while family and friends are sipping tomato juice, heat the rolls in the oven. Open some canned beans, sea son them creatively and heat them on top of the range; turn them into your best bean pot or casserole and top with crisp bacon. With the cheese rolls and beans, bring on com on the cob?fresh or frozen. For dessert, cookies with milk or coffee and a bowl of fall fruit. Or if your picnic includes teen-agers, you might make dessert an ice cream soda ? their favorite "Black Cow". Arrange this easy-do supper on a buffet table near your fireplace. Let the gang draw up chairs, help themselves. Good food, good talk and the glow of flickering logs ? what's more heart-warming? CHEESE AND HAM STUFFED ROLLS Ingredients: 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, 1 cup ground cooked ham, 6 tablespoons mayon naise or cooked salad dressing, Va cup chopped sweet cucumber pickle, 1 tablespoon finely grated onion, l teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper, 6 to 8 frankfurter rolls, soft butter. Mehrtod: Mix together cheese, ham, mayonnaise, pickle, onion and Worcestershire; season to taste with salt and pepper. Cut slice off the top of each roll; scoop out cen ter. (Dry the scooped-out crumbs and save for use in poultry stuff ing.) Spread inside of scooped-ovt rolls with butter. Fill hollow of each roll with cheese mixture; re place top. Wrap each roll in alum inum foil; refrigerate. Before serv ing put them in a moderate oven until they are hot through. Serve in wrappers. Brown bread on both sides In % c. shortening In a skillet. Slice 3 medium bananas and place a layer of fruit on each of 4 slices of French toast Cover with second slice of French tout. Serve with maple syrup. To make the toastwlch, butter 12 slices bread with % e. soft butter. Ms|ke 8 sandwiches by placing 2 tbfp. strawberry preserves between 'Ices of buttered bread (takes % 'reserves In all). Tomato-Cheese Sauce To serve 6, combine one can condensed tomato SQU& V\ c. milk, Vfc tap. onion Juice, tsp. pre pared mustard and Vfc tsp. Wor cestershire sauce. Heat well. Add 2 c grated processed cheese and stir until It melts. For each serv ing, place 2 deviled egg halves on slice of toast and cover with ft c. hot tomato sauce. Ham Toastwlcb next, the rec ipe for 6. Combine & c. soft butter and 2 tbsp. prepared mustard and spread on 12 bread slices. Makes 0 boiled ham sandwiches.
