Sprinkle sugar oil late in the baking, not at the beginning. The crusty, sugary top is liked by chil dren as well as the grownups. Some cooks like to add butter to v haking apple. Bake apples the night before; serve them with cereal and top with milk as a breakfast starter. DEEP DISH APPLE PIE?makes a fine winter night dessert. Pare and core apples; cut in halves; ar range in deep baking dish. Add one-fourth cup mixed orange juice and water. Sprinkle layers with mixed sugar, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Cover with your best pastry, and bake like apple pie. Or mix a special dessert pastry of butter sugar, a little flour, and a spoon ful of vanilla flavoring. Work into smooth pastry. Roll in waxed paper; chill; slice in circles; lay circles over apples. Bake like apple pie. Serve warm with cream or sour creain. BROWN BETTY THAT'S SCRUMPTIOUS?Pare enough ap ples to make one quart sliced. Mix with six cups soft bread crumbs in a buttered two-quart casserole. Mix one-half cup melted butter or mar garine with one cup brown sugar, one-half teaspoon cinnamon, and three tablespoons lemon juice. Pour sugar mixture over apples and erate oven '350t degrees* for 45 minutes. Remove cover; sprinkle crumbs. Cover dish.
