Hendersonville Here Friday Night Fer Major Blue Ridge Cage Clash; Here And Yonder The Sportscope By BOB CONWAY ? We have been wondering today if the Mountaineers have ever before in history played so many basketball games in one season in which the final outcome was in doubt right down to the last sec ond of the contest? Three of their last four games have been of the "photo finish" variety ? against Canton. Bethel, and Clyde. All In all. Waynesvillf has playtd three games in which the winning margin was only one point and have played two more in which the final edge was only two points. So, if it's thrillers you like, don't miss any of the Mountaineers' hardwood hassles. The big 'un coming up here tomorrow night against Hendersonviile should offer more of the same excitement. * The attendance at the Canlon-Waynesville game here broke all records set last year, but the Bethel game came along a week later and established another record. The officiating at the Clyde-Waynesville game Tuesday night was the poorest we've seen in Western North Carolina, but it was not one sided ? both teams suffered during the rough and tumble action. For a time the contest strongly resembled a football game and looked for a while as if the proceedings might get out of hand. However. Waynesville's defeat at Clyde can't be blamed on the officials. The Mountaineers just weren't hitting enough and were outrebounded too often. Waynesville's new cheerleaders make a very striking appear ance on the hardwood. Glad to have them on hand. And speaking of cheerleaders, Clyde's corps are decked out in maroon and gold jeans. One of these days they're going to play a basketball game in the Waynesville gym without having to stop to mop up a soft drink that somebody spilled on the playing floor. Bethel High Splits With Edneyville Bethel split a pair of games with Fdneyville at Bethel Tuesday night, the Belles winning. 68-42. and the Blue Demons losing. 64-41. Clyde Hands Mountaineer Cagers First Loss_As Rally Falls Short By BOB CONWAY The law of averages caught up with Waynesville Tuesday night at Clyde and the Mountaineers were knocked out of the undefeated class as a fourth-period rally fell short by two points. 43-41. The Waynesville girls also found the going rough in Cardinals country, but put on the pressure to win, 63-57. Five otner times thiR season, the Mountaineers have stared defeat squarely in the face?against Mur phy, Clyde (here), Fines Creek. Canton, and Bethel, but alwavs have managed before to emerge on '.he fat end of the store. However. Clyde, who lost by only one point on the WTHS floor Before Christmas after leading most of the way, was not to he lenied Tuesday night and took ad vantage of Mountaineer miscues to wrap up its first major county vic tory this year. Summing ep the game in a few words, it was the steady playing of Clyde versus the irregular offen sive of Waynesville that spelled the difference. In the second quarter. Clyde scored nine straight points, while Waynesville went scoreless and again at the end of the third char ter and start of the fourth the Cardinals sank four field goals in succession while the Mountaineers failed to find the range. In the falal second quarter. Waynesville went six and a half minutes without a point until Don Jordan dumped in two layups t;> cut Clyde's halftime margin to only four points. 'and they never were headed again Trailing by nine points midway in the fourth quarter, the Moun taineers started a last-ditch rally, sparked by Jordan, who hit three quick baskets, and Tom Sparks who converted two free throws. This sudden surge might have overtaken the Cardinals had it not been for the team's smallest mem ber, Danny Caldwell, who caged two fouls and then sneaked through for a layup that provided the win ning margin. Waynesville hit on 11 out of 18 free throw attempts, while Clyde cashed in 13 out of 21 tries. Jordan was again high scorer for the Mountaineers with 20 points, while Carroll Hooper was second highest with 10, exhibiting some nice shots under the basket.
