God's Concern for Sinners (Temperance) HE SENT HIS SON TO COME TO SAVE THE LOST Scripture?Luke lS:l-Si. By NEWMAN CAMPBELL MANY publicans and sinners gathered around Jesus to hear Him preach. The Pharisees and scribes criticized Him because, they said, "This man receiveth sinners and eateth with them"? something the orthodox Jew never would do. Jesus, reading their thoughts, said: "What man of you. having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost until he find it ?" / Then he would call his friends and ask them to rejoice with him, for he had found the lost one. . i "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance." Aother parable Jesus told along i was this son that he even envied the pigs the husks he was feeding them. Then he thought of all the serv ants his father hired, and that th^y were all well fed and com fortable He would go back home, he decided, and tell his father how he had sinned, and that he was no longer worthy to be called his son. Would his father forgive him. and let him be one of his servants? He went home and told his fa ther how he felt, but instead of scolding him, the father was so pleased to see him again that he dressed him in One clothes, put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet, saying: "Let us eat and -be merry: for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found." Such love is like God's for us. It will not let us go. Happy the erring son or daughter who has such parents. Small children may MEMORY VERSE "For the Son o/ man it come to teek and to tore that which wot lost.''?Luke 19:10. the same lines was about a wom an who lost a piece of silver of the 10 she possessed. She would sweep her house diligently, said the Lord, until she found the lost coin, then call her friends to be glad with her over its recovery. The third parable Jesus' told these church authorities was the familiar one of the prodigal son. A man had two sons, and the younger asked his father to divide his possessions with the two. The father did so. and the younger son took all he possessed and went on a journey into a faraway country, where he squandered all he had in riotous living. t* Then a famine struck that country, and having 'kpent his all he went to a citizen of the coun try and asked him for a job. The man sent him into the (Veld to care for his swine. So hungry Based on roDvrinhted outline* orodured know of a family one of whoae members has gone astray and been received at home again with rejoicing. Older ones may recall a family whose husband and father had been a drunkard or a gambler for years, to their great sorrow and even suffering. Then, realising the peril from his way of life, he has turned from his fauK and become again a Ane citizen, making his home life happy and secure once more. What rejoicing must there be in such a household! If we, so full of faults for which we must ask forgiveness, can learn to forgive others as God forgives us, and as Jesus, in His sojourn on earth, forgave sinners and tried to turn them to the paths of righteousness, surely there will be rejoicing in heaven for us as well as for Uiem, too. , bv the Divimon at Oirlmu Uimtine fUtlonal Council of Churches of Christ in the U S 4.. and used by permission. piiti.tufd by King Features Syncflcstt This is a scene* you see every Sunday . . . hundreds of men and women pouring out of our churches. What effect does it have on the life of our com munity? There was more happiness in our streets this week . . . more sympathy and understanding . . . more kindness and helpfulness . . . more determination to attain the highest moral and spiritual ideals. We won't see Utopia next week. Human nature is still human. Perfection is God's alone. But crowded churches change many lives. Worship and prayer strengthen souls.
