Jesus Teaches Gratitude WE SHOULD GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR HIS BLESSINGS Scripture?Luke _ By NEWMAN CAMPBELL GRATITUDE is rather a long word for small children to under stand, but it simply means giving thanks for our blessingl, for cour tesies or benefits bestowed upon us, etc. It seems sometimes that courtesy has gone out of fashion, but there are still people who are polite, and when we meet them, we should thank them, to show our gratituder Gratitude, like charity, should begin in the home. Children should be taught to appreciate their good parents, their homes, their friends, and let them know that they do. We should also enjoy and give thanks for this beautiful world in which we live, not only enjoy ing its beauty, but giving thanks to God for it and doing our best to help to make it the type of world of which He will approve. In the first verses of our les son Jesus says that it is impos sible to avoid offences; they will about it, but say to themselves, "We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do." That also is a point for us to remember. Our duties should be performed because they are our work which we should do. We should not be proud of ourselves because we perform them, al though we must admit that we usually are glad in our hearts when we do our duties promptly and well. As Christ entered a certain vil lage near the border of Samaria, He saw 10 lepers standing some distance away because they were not permitted to approach others without warning them with the cry "Unclean!" The poor creatures begged Jesus: "Jesus, Master, have mercy upon us!" He said to them! "Go show yourselves unto the priests," and, a~: they went, they were cleansed. MEMORY VERSE "It is a good thing to jive thanks unto the Lord."~Psalm 92:1. come, but worse than the offender is the one who causes another to stumble, and He pronounces a ter rible punishment for such who do. Then Christ turns His talk to forgiveness. If another should wrong you and say he is sorry and repents his deed, you should forgive him. Even if the offence is repeated seven times and the offender says he repents, even if the repentance may be insincere, he should be forgiven rather than that you should hurt the one who is. in truth, sincere. For His first lesson in grati tude Jesus said: "Which of you having a servant plowing or feed ing cattle, will say unto him. when he is come from the field, Co and ait down to meat?" He would probably say instead that the servant should wait upon him, before he eats, and Jesus asked His followers if the man thus served would think of thank ing the servant who had served him? Jesus then reminded His follow ers that, when they had dpne their duty, they should not be puffed up Now we would naturally expect that after the priesta had pro nounced them clean they would have hurried back to Christ to give Him their heartfelt thanks. Now they could go about among other men; they could return to their families; their whole Uvea could be happy again. How many came to Him? One , man and one only. He returned, and when he saw that he was healed, he cried with a loud voice, glorifying God. Then he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving thanks to Him, and this man was a Samaritan, whom the Jews de spised. And the Christ said to him, "Were there not 10 cleansed: but where are the nine?" To the man He said, "Arise, go thy wrfy; thy faith hath made thee whole." Let us all remember to be grateful for all the blessings we have received through life. Even when sorrow comes, we should still be conscious that we are blessed in many ways, and thank our Father in heaven for these. ?need OB eopyrtgh(ed outi.r ? produced by (he DWieton or Chrietlaa Educedon. Any time she wants to, she can whip off that blindfold in the twinkling of an eye. But . . . suppose she couldn't? What if she were forced to keep her blindfold on forever? There are many places in the world today where people are blindfolded, mentally and spiritually, and where they are denied one of the greatest of all freedoms ... the freedom to worship as they will. We, who have that freedom, should guard and cherish it. For ours is the right to be enlightened. If we don't go to Church, if we refuse to remove our own spir itual blindfolds, we have no one but ourselves to blame. Put on a blindfold, and see how it feels. Imagine what it would be like to wear it forever, over our eyes, our minds, our souls. Then, next Sunday, go to church?and find out what it really means to see! ,w? * A<* 'll llli * J&.: ? ... .. THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his mora! and material support. Plan to go to church regu larly and read your Bible daily. Day Book Chapter Veraee Similar lob It I2-2S Monday I.taiah 11 It Tuesday Xcchariab 8 1-8 Wednesday Matthew 15 - 1-20 v Thursday.
