100-Bushel Corn Club Luncheon Set February 11 L Y. BALLENTINE ? DR. E. R. COLLINS L. T. Ballantlne, North Carolina ?tate commissioner of agriculture, will be the principal speaker at the annual 100 Bushel Corn Club luncheon to be held Saturday, Feb ruary 11, at 12 o'clock in the George Vanderbilt Hotel, Ashevllle, it has been announced by James G. K. McClure. president of the Farmers Federation, which spon sors the event each year. The luncheon is given in honor of all Western North Carolina corn growers who grew a 100 or more bushels of corn on a measured acre of land during the past year. A special $100 prize will be awarded to the farmer who grew the highest yield in Western North Carolina and another $50 prize will be given to the 4-H dr FKA boy who also grew the most number of corn bushels on a measured acre of land. Highlighting the program with Ballantlne will be Dr. Emerson R Collins, N. C. State College agron omy specialist, also known as "Dr. Corn," who has attended many corn luncheons In past years. . McClure also announced the members of a special luncheon com mittee headed by W. B Collins. Western District agent, and How ard Gryder. supervisor of voca tional agriculture in Western North Carolina. Collins is chairman of the committee and Gryder co-chair, man. Members of the committee In clude Guy M. Sales, general man ager of the Farmers Federation; C. H. Klrkman, McDowell County farm agent; Jack Lyday, Swain County farm agent; H. G. Sliver, Madison County farm agent; M. C. Nix. Bethel vocational agricultural teacher; and B. L. Finger, Avondale vocational agricultural teacher. The Latin Club, with sponsor, Mrs. Cathey, and president Hermit Hyatt, had a "rip roaring" banquet. The old members dressed as the Roman nobility and the new mem bers as slaves and were required to serve their masters during the banquet and initiation. A sump tuous three course dinner was served and the banquet was eon sidered a great success. CHS band members had a pleas ant trip to Cullowhee this past week. They all agreed that this year's All-State Band was the best yet. We are all looking forward to hearing our band play for an assembly program. Senior Superlatives have just re cently been announced. For Best All Around, Janice Earley and Dale Childers; Most Studious. Marilyn Moore and Robert Deas; Most Popular, Nancye Smathers and Charles West; Class Babies, Betty Gaddy and Johnuy Coleman; Most Athletic, Barbara Cars well and Joe Rhinehart; Most Talented, Glenda Pressley and Darrell Hawkins; Cutest, Maria nna Moon and Smith Nicholls; Most Likely to Succeed, Margar et Ann Gidney and John Jamison. We seniors are proud of them. Our Future Teacher Club, spon sored by Miss Johnson and Mrs. Peniand, has begun making plans for the N.C.E.A. Tea which they give each year for the teachers.
