Canton And Waynesville Cagers Meet In Return Match At Canton Friday ?? ? i ___= County Tournament Opens Next Week At Bethel Here And Yonder The Sportscope By BOB CONWAY The boys' division of the Haywood County basketball tourna ment this year appears to be more wide open than it has been in several seasons ? with three teams I Waynesville. Bethel, and Clyde) evenly matched and Fines Creek in the role of a darkhorse. At first, the championship usually involved Canton and Bethel and then when the Black Bears dropped out of the tourna ment, the finalists were Bethel and Waynesville. Canton again has passed up the county meet and the Clyde Cardinals hayp entered the circle of top contenders ? holding single victories over both Waynesville and Bethel, the other two members of the Big Three. However, since Fines Creek played the Mountaineers two close games, the Hornets can't be entirely counted out of competi tion and could spill one of the favorites. Crabtree-lron Duff, with only one county win this year, ap parently doesn't have the artillery to go all the way in the tourna ment, which opens Wednesday at Bethel. Waynesville, which has lost only one county tilt (to Clyde), probably has the strongest team in tne tournament potentially, but the Mountaineers have their bad nights, in which some members of the squad have difficulty in finding the range. When the Gold and Black sharpshooters are "on", however, they can pour in the poiqts. In the girls' division, the Betrtel Belles will be heavily favored with the Waynesville Mountainettes in the No. 2 spot. However, any of the other four county sextets could come through on any given night. Waynesville has the best chance of upsetting the smooth playing Belles, but in two games this year the Mountainettes have frittered away their chances of victory with poor passes, weakness at the free-throw line, and an inability to stop Shirley Smith. The Waynesville girls are still haunted by their "under the basket" fixation of past seasons, and continually lose the ball try ing to pass to Tulan Carver. But Bethel's tight guarding seldom permits Miss Carver to get her clutches on the ball and when she does, she's usually pressed too hard to do anything with it. Against Bethel Friday before last, she got only three points. If Waynesville puts its dependence on the kind of shots that Agnes Roberson does so well, and on driving into the basket, the mountain maidens could upset the Belles. But If they insist on pursuing a lost cause, it'll be the same old story if Waynesville and Bethel meet in the tournament. What we'd like to see is a girls' team with Agnes Roberson of Waynesville, Shirley Smith of Bethel, and Betty Owenby of Clyde as the three forwards. Miss Owenby has hit the high-water mark this season with her 47 points against Fletcher, Other top scorers in the county have been Catherine and Ethel Ferguson'of Fines Creek, Bessie Phillips of Canton, and Louise Presnell and Louise Best of Crabtree-Iron Duff. Clyde Boys Down Bethel In Close Contest, 34-32 The Clyde Cardinals served notice that they will be a contend er for the Haywood County basket ball championship next week when they got revenge for an earlier loss to Bethel by edging the Blue Demons at Clyde Tuesday night, 34-32. It was Clyde's first athletic victory over a Bethel team in the -past several years. The Bethel Belles, however, were never in trouble in downing the Clyde Cardinalettes, 57-35. The boys' game was strictly a defensive battle, in which both teams scored only 11 points in the first half, leaving the score dead locked at the itnermission. Howard Shook was the hero of the evening for Clyde as he dump ed in-17 points from his center slot. Bob McCracken contributed another dozen. Dean Reese with 11 and Gerald Hill with 10 paced the Blue De mons. In the girls' game, sophomore Shirley Smith bucketed 31 points for Bethel, while Betty Owenby hit 17 and Anna Jean Medford 16 for Clyde. The score at the half was 32-13 in favor of the Belles.
