grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tues
day at 2:30 p.m. in the Canton
Presbyterian Church. The Rev. J.
C. Lime officiated and burial was
in Locust Field Cemetery.

son, James Nelson, Willard Mash
burn. Ray Haley, Bruce Nanney
and O. F. Gillis.
Wells Funeral Home was in

A statewide contest to pick North
Carolina's best boy and girl school
bus driver got official commenda
tion today from Dr. Charles F. Car
roll, Superintendent of Public In
struction and Motor Vehicles Com
missioner Ed Scheidt, speaking as
chairman of the Governor's Traf
fic Safety Council, sponsor of the
event which will be repeated an
nually.
The contest is open to all stu
dent drivers, with two winners ?
a boy and a girl?to be selected
from each of the State Highway
Patrol's 30 administrative districts.
District winners, in turn, will
compete in the finals to be held
in Chapel Hill someitme after the
end of the school year.
The winning couple each will re
ceive a $500 scholarship from the
Governor's Traffic Safety Council
in cooperation with the N. C. Stale
Automobile Association.
Motor Vehicles Department of
ficials said that North Carolina,
with 7500 units, operates the na
tion's largest fleet of state-owned
school buses. Driven almost en
tirely by students, they are on the
move every day with more than
475,000 youngsters aboard.
