Waynesville Boys, Bethel Girls Capture County Tourney Championships Mountaineer Five Comes From Behind By BOB CONWAy Reason's records proved accur ate Indications of the outcome of the fourth annual Haywood Coun ty basketball tournament at Beth el Saturday night aa the Waynea vllle Mountaineers and the Bethel Bellea captured the championship In their rejective divisions. Both teams were seeded No 1 In partings made a week earlier. The Mouhtalneer* rallied In the faurth quarter to overtake a flred up band olf Bethel Blue Demon* and go onlo win, 92-47, but the Belie ware never In trouble in winning 98-8(1 over the Waynesvllle Mountalnettes, who experienced one 'of their wont nights of the season, TP The boya.' game was close all the way WayafevUle had the edge during the, first and fourth quar ters, but the Blue Demon* domin ated action In the second and third perloda. Bethel Jumped off to an early lead, but Waynesvllle deadlocked tile count at 10-10 midway in the quarter and then went ahead at the end of the period, 18-16. In the uecond quarter, the two taams battled on fairly even terms until late in the p?rio<l when goals by Reese and Singleton and a foul toss by the latter put the Blue Demons ahead at the half, 28-25. In the third quarter. L. M. West and Dale Singleton sparked the Bethel attack and it appeared the Blue and White was on the way to a tournament victory as the period ended with the Demons still in the lead at 42-38. However, the Mountaineers came to life again in the fourth quarter and poured in 14 points, while holding Bethel to only seven. In that stretch drive?while fans on both sides of the gym raised the roof ? Tony Davis tallied four points for Waynesville. Don Jor dan got three, and Carroll Hoop er. Tom Sparks and Bobby Bal lance two each. It was Sparks' field er that put the Mountaineers ahead midway in the fourth quarter for the first time since early in the tecond period. With a little more than two mln jtes to play, Ballance of Waynes rllle fouled out. but Don Ezeli came In and joined his four team mates in putting on a freeze to run out the clock. v The freeze was broken only when Hooper slipped beneath the goal for a reverse layup. after which the Blue Demons scored their final goal on a short push shot. At the foul line, the Mountain eers dropped in 18 shots out of a total of 27. while Bethel made good on seven out of 18. Scoring for the Mountaineers was well divided with Sparks and Hooper rtcttlng 12 each and Jor dan and Davis 11 apiece. Ballance added six more. Dale Singleton was high for Bethel with 14 points, while Dean Reese contributed eight more. In the girls' game, the eventual outcome was evident early as An nette Lowe of Bethel opened scor ing for the Belles by dropping in a long shot and kept the net warm for the rest of the evening by hit ling continually from out in the suburb*. Waynesville fan* probably sua- ? pected a lid had been put on the basket as the Mountainettes took a big number of shots, but con nected far too seldom. The Belles themselvs did not play their best game of the season, but still scored often enough to maintain a comfortable lead. They were out In front at the end of the first quarter, 14-9, at the half, 29 1S, and at the eijd of the third quarter, 39-23. Miss Lowe led the Belles' on slaught with 21 points, Shirley Smith hit 20 and Eva Nell Henson banked In 16. Agnes Roberson got all but five of Waynesville'* points with a 31 total. In the first of two tournament games Thursday night, the Waynes ville Mountainettes chalked up their third consecutive win of the season over Crgbtree - Iron Duff's girls, but had to come from behind a 29-27 halftime deficit to win. Agnes Roberson poured in 30 points for Waynesville, while Lou ise Presnel) tossed in 27 for the Blue Eagles. Myrtle Fitzgerald found the range for 17 points for WTHS. and Louise Best came through with 14 for Crabtret. The Crabtree sextet won Its first tournament .game Wednesday by turning back the Clyde girts. 67 47. In the boys' game Thursday night, the Clyde Cardinals, handi capped by the loss of their top re bounder and one of the team's steady scorers ? David Joe Mc Cracken?were no match for the Bethel Blue Demons and went down. 79-52. Dale Singleton dropped In 21 and Dean Reese for Bethel, but Bob McCracken of Clyde was high scorer for the game with 27 points. The Blue Demons were ahead at the half. 36-24. The third meeting of the sea son between the Waynesville and Fines Creek boys was faf differ ent than the first two, in which the Hornets played the taller WTHS cagers close games. Friday night, however, the Mountaineers' fast break was working to perfec tion and the outcome was never in doubt. Most of Waynesvllle's scores came in layups, tip-ins, and short push shots. A notable exception was Bobby Bailance's long shot from the center of the floor which swished through the net as the buzzer sounded ending the third quarter. ? In the first quarter, the Moun taineers hit 18 points and limited the Hornets to one lone field goal to go ahead at the end of the per iod. 18r7. At the Intermission, the Gold and Black dribblers extended their lead to 31-18. As the secoqd half opened. I Fines Creek's big center ? James Ferguson ? fouled out and the Mountaineers turned on the steam for 29 points to make the count 60-29 at the end of the third per iod. In the latter part of the quar ter, Waynesville scored 14 straight points in less than three minutes time. Substitutes played much of the fourth quarter as Coach Bill Swift took out his regulars to save them for Bethel. Captain Don Jordna finished the game as high scorer for Way nesville with 20 points. Ballance netted 15. and Tony Davis and Tom Sparks each contributed a dozen. ' ~ '. ? ? John Evans played an outstand ing game for the Fines Creeken with 23 points and ? good per formance under the boards. Red hatred Charles Haynes came through with another 12 for the 31ue and White. Starting their defense of the county girls' title Friday night, the Bethel Belles had trouble getting xeroed In on the target and failed to make a point for the first six minutes against the Fines Creek girls. Shirley Smith hit two field ers for Bethel before the quarter ended, but the Fillies were out In wiiwtaj jo; spy front, 8-4: at the buzzer. The Belles surged ahead in the second quarter momentarily at 12 10, but Ethel Ferguson tallied four points and Lois Hunter two for Fines Creek and the Fillies went back into the lead at 16-12. However, Betty Smith sank four field goals and a foul and Eva Nell Henson banked in one to put the Belles ahead at the half, 23-16. Bethel completely domlTiated play in the second half and widen ed its lead to 39-27 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Belles poured in 18 points, while Fines Creek connected for only four. Miss Smith was again high scor er for the Bethel brigade with 32 points, while Ethel Ferguson was tops for the Fillies with 14 points.
