I JOHN CARVER, Chairman OBJECTIVES: 1. To work with all agricultural agencies, organixatlons, and interested individuals for further development of agriculture in Haywood County. X. To make Haywood County the most highly organized, ef ficient and fully developed agricultural County in the State. , 3. To promote in every way the economic, cultural, and spirit ual life of the farm people in this county so that Haywood will con tinue to be the best County in which to live and work. ACTIVITIES: Held Joint meetings with agricultural leaders to discuss farm problems and needs. Adopted long-range program for improving farm economy in Haywood County through: 1. Boys and girls club work. ? - 2. Diversified farming and new markets, 3. Specialized farming, 4. Better rural-urban relationships, and ' 6. Completion of the Livestock Show and Home Arts Building. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Under the leadership of Virgil Holloway. County Agent. Miss Mary Corn well. Home Agent and John Carver, Division Chairman, with other agencies cooperating, these things were done: 1. The annual out-of-state farm tour was resumed. 2. Enabling legislation to provide tax money for building the Livestock Show and Home Arts Building was passed. 2. Several farm conferences and one day educational confer encea were held for discussing and hearing discussed various phaaes of the Counly'a agricultural program. 4. An experimental Christmas Tree project of 1,000 trees was established aa a source of future farm income in cooperation with the soil conservation program. B. The annual Haywood County Tobacco HaiVevt Festival wax w reorganized and staged. Civic And Professional Division CHAfcLES WAY, Chairman READY! The Civic and Professional Division was organized for the first time in 195S. AIM! The objectives were to bring those individuals, civic groups, and professional organizations in the greater Waynesville, Hazelwood, Lake Junaluska area into closer relationships and to promote har mony and good fellowship among them; to foster high Ideals in civic organizations and professional groups; to encourage practices and properly promote the civic improvements and area development to the best interests and mutual benefits of the people. BULL'S EYE! 1. Conducted Clean-Up and Beautification Campaign. Organized entire community on project to clean-up, paint-up. and fix-up homes, yards, vacant lots, etc. Adopted program for long-term planning in area beantification. Sold 338 pink and white dogwood trees for planting throughout the area. 2. Developed summer series of entertainment and cultural Im provement under the direction of Mrs. Walter Baermann: a. Arthur Stupka, Park Naturalist ? Lecture b. Nelson and Neal ? Piano Duo c. John Parris ? Lecture d. Civic Band Concerts ? Local band under leadership of e. Art Exhibit ? Haywood County Art Charles Isley 3. Sponsored voluntary automobile inspection program under direction of Police Chief Orville Noland and State Highway Patrol. 4. Worked with city officials recommending sidewalk and street improvements. Several projects underway. % 8. Committee on Health working to improve health and sanitary conditions by better garbage pickup and disposal and removal of sub-standard housing. 6. Worked with Individuals and agencies in establishing meet ings and conferences held in the Waynesville area: _a. Seventh-Day Adventist Camp Meeting ? 1.200 people m b. Mountaintop Medical Assembly ? 200 people je. W.O.W. Log Rolling ? 300 people ^ d. Annual Summer Masonic Assembly ? 400 people, e. Haywood County Day at Lake Junaluska f. Delta Sigma Phi ? Business and Professional Men's Frater nity Reception ? 45 people g. Fall meeting of Department of Conservation and Develop ment ? 80 people 7. Organized Haywood County Chapter of Carolinas United Fund, Dr. J. E. Fender, President; Haywood County Chapter of the United Cerebral Palsy Association, N. J. Tucker. President and the Haywood County Humane Society, Mrs. Sara Campbell, President 8. North Carolina Department of Conservation and Develop ment here in October. Invited the Department of Conservation and Development to Waynesville for fall meeting. Planned and organiz ed entertainment program for the members of the Department and wives including Governor and Mrs. Hodges. The Waynesville meet ing was conceded to be one of the finest ever held by the Depart ment of Conservation and Development. 9. The Carolina Jubilee Horse Show was staged in August. Made industrial prospect contacts through ads and direct mailing. DEVELOPED NEW PLAYS! Publishing Industrial Booklet for attracting new industries (Now at Press). A FIELD GOAL SCORED! Dayton Rubber Company expansion plans announced. A COSTLY PENALTY! Unagusta Manufacturing Plant No. 2 destroyed by fire in November. Haywood's Annual Industrial Payroll . The Merchants Association voted to affiliate itself with the Chamber of Commerce and function as a division of the Chamber. TRADE PROMOTIONS! A program of radio, newspaper, and mail-away advertising was followed in an effort to expand the Waynesville trade area. Spon sored an active program of trade promotions including: 1. Fourth of July Carnival 2. Mid-Summer Clearance Sale 3. Baelg-To-School 4. Harvest Festival 5. Golden Harvest Drawings 6. Christmas Parade TOBACCO HARVEST FESTIVAL! Financed jointly with the Chamber of Commerce, the Haywood County Tobacco Harvest Festival. GOOD CREDIT! Established Waynesville Merchants Association Credit Bureau. BEAUTIFUL LIGHTS! Bought and paid for new Christmas ornaments for street decora tions. Published inquiry List of inquiries received wanting information about Waynesville area, accommodations, etc., and mailed to hotel, motel, court, and guest home operators and real estate agents. SMARTIES! Answered all mail inquiries with specific personal letters and/or brochures and other mailing pieces. COOPERATION! Worked with Haywood County Highlanders distributing 20,000 accommodations booklets. Mailed to travel agencies. Chamber of Commerce offices and individuals throughout the country as request ed. Contributed financially to Highlanders advertising and publlca ' tions. HELP! Assisted summer visitors in finding overnight, weekly, monthly, and seasonal lodgings in rooms, courts, hotels, motels, apartments, and summer cottages and houses. BUSYBODIES! Handled office and telephone contact and inquiries, sold tickets to "Unto These Hills", and handled travel routings in and out of the area and scenic routings for summer visitors. LOOKING AHEAD! Prepared and published a new twelve-page Waynesville area two color folder with four-color cover, will have 20,000 printed for distri bution in 1956.
