Jesus Faces the City CHRIST WEEPS OVER JERUSALEM WHICH WOULD NOT HEED HIS MESSAGE Scripture?Luke 19:Zt?BO .17. By NEWMAN CAMPBELL WE ARE now studying the events of Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week that ended in Jeius' death on the cross. Jesus and His disciples were on their way to Jerusalem. As they neared Bethany, Jesus told two of His disciples to go into the vil lage where they would find a colt tied. They were to loose him and bring him to Jesus. If the owner asked why they did this, they were to say, "Because the Lord hath need of Him." v When the disciples returned with the colt. His companions put their garments upon the beast and set Jesus on him. As they started on their way, they spread their clothes in the path, and when they arrived at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the disciples be gan to rejoice and praise God with loud voices, saying, "Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord; peace In heaven, and glory in the highest." The Pharisees who had joined the welcoming crowd, told Christ He should rebuke the disciples, but He answered that If He si lenced them, the very stones would take up the cry. When Jesus first glimpsed his i did what He did. He, in turn, asked them a question: "The bap tism of John, was it from heaven, or of men T" They dared not answer that be cause the people looked upon John the Baptist as a prophet, so they answered that they could not tell, so Jesus said: "Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things." To show how wicked and vin dictive these men-of the church were, they set spies, posing as good men, to question Him. They flattered Him by saying that they knew that He taught and preached rightly, but was it lawful to give tribute to Caesar? Jesus, of course, saw through their hypocrisy and asked for a coin. "Whose image and super-, scripture hath it?" He asked. They answered, "Caesar's." "Ren der therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's and unto God the things which be God's," Christ answered, which ended that matter. All these evil men could do was to marvel at His answers. Now the Sadducecs, who did not believe in resurrection, came to Him asking a very ridiculous question. According to the ancient . . i MEMORY VERSE "If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto peace.''?Luke 19.it. beloved city. He wept because He knew that in a matter of years it would lay in ruins from the action Of its enemies. "If thou hadst known, even* thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes." * Then Jesus described the hor rors to come when the beautiful city of Jerusalem would be de stroyed by enemies. Going into the temple, Christ found it like a bazaar?bargain ing, selling, buying going on in the house of the Lord. He began casting out both buyers and sell ers, saying, "My house is the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." This was the second time that Jesus had cleansed the temple of such people. Jesus continued to preach daily in the temple, and the chief priests, scribes and principal men sought to destroy Him, but they dare not for the people "were very attentive to hear Him." This happened on Monday of Holy Week. The chief priests, scribes and elders came to Jesus next day, asking Him by what authority He Hebrew lew when a. Hebrew died leaving no children, his brother should marry his widow and raise children. If seven brothers mar ried the same woman as each brother died, whose wife would she be in heaven? they asked. Jesus pointed out that in heaven there would be no marriage re lationship. ? We will have to omit the last verses assigned to our lesson, as we have no mort space. We may, however, write briefly of the ter rible denunciation of the scribes, whom Jesus says are those who "desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats In the syna gogues. and the chief rooms at feasts; Which devour widows" houses, <hd for a show make long prayers; the same shall receive greater damnation." Jesus hud no use for hypocrites. Times have not changed much since Christ's day. We still have insincere people, scoffers of those who are trying to better the world. We can only strive to fol low In Christ's footsteps as"we 11 as we can, and train the children under our care to do likewise for the Saviour who suffered and died for us.
