Griffin Has Lifted Clyde
Teams From Sports Cellar
By BOB CONWAY
Although he's only 29 years old.
Coach H. B. Griffin of Clyde High
School is an "old-timer" in the
coaching held.
In fact, the Cardinal mentor!
made his debut ih the business of
tutoring athletes at the tender age
of IS after graduation from Edney
ville High School in 1941
His first spot as a sports skipper
was managing an industrial league
baseball team In Henderson Coun
ty. Later he played two years of
professional baseball with Clinton,
N.C., a Philadelphia Phillies farm
club in the Tobacco State League,
but his promising aareer in the
sport was cut short by a shoulder
injury incurred' pltylilg football at
Western Carolina College.
During World War II, Mr. Griffin
left Cullowhee to serve with the
Air Force for 11 months. After his
discharge, he returned to Western
Carolina and received his degree
last year.
Under his tutelage, the Clyde
Cardinals, lightly regarded In
athletic circles for the past several
years, have become a power in Just
one year and made an excellent
record in both football and basket
ball in the new Skyline A Confer
ence the past season.
Although they won only one foot
ball game under another coach dur
ing 1954, the Cardinal gridders
were runner-up In football this
year in the Skyline Conference, be
hind champion Harris High of
Spruce Pine.
As a result, Clyde had several
football players named on confer
ence and WNC all-star teams and
had two boys?David Joe McCrack
en and Charlie Donnahoe?in the
Midwestern-Buncombe grid classic
at Aaheville on Thanksgiving Day.
In basketball, the Maroon and
Gold proved equally tough by post
ing a 15-5 over-all mark and a 7-1
record in the Skyline Conference.
High points of Clyde's cage sea
son were victories over tradition
al rivals Bethel and Waynesvllle.
In first games* with Waynesville
and Canton, the Cardinals led
through most of the game although
they were nosed out at the finish.
Although he has played and
coached baseball, basketball, and
football, Coach Griffin picks base
ball as his favorite. "I loved it and
believe I had a future in it," he
commented.
ApprSntly. coaching runs in the !
CiTiffin family becauae a brother, '
Odell. is at the helm at Fletcher ,
High School. (Clyde and Fletcher I
met twice in basketball this season. I
and the Haywood countlans won all
four games.) I
In March, Mr. Griffin will take |
i 10-week leave of absence to take
two physical education courses at i
Western Carolina College, which l
fie needs to fat his master's degree, t
. After that, he says, he hopes to t
return to Clyde and guide the t
ligh-flying Cardinals to new tri
umphs. "
