Griffin of Clyde High School is an "old-timer" in the coaching held. In fact, the Cardinal mentor! made his debut ih the business of tutoring athletes at the tender age of IS after graduation from Edney ville High School in 1941 His first spot as a sports skipper was managing an industrial league baseball team In Henderson Coun ty. Later he played two years of professional baseball with Clinton, N.C., a Philadelphia Phillies farm club in the Tobacco State League, but his promising aareer in the sport was cut short by a shoulder injury incurred' pltylilg football at Western Carolina College. During World War II, Mr. Griffin left Cullowhee to serve with the Air Force for 11 months. After his discharge, he returned to Western Carolina and received his degree last year. Under his tutelage, the Clyde Cardinals, lightly regarded In athletic circles for the past several years, have become a power in Just one year and made an excellent record in both football and basket ball in the new Skyline A Confer ence the past season. Although they won only one foot ball game under another coach dur ing 1954, the Cardinal gridders were runner-up In football this year in the Skyline Conference, be hind champion Harris High of Spruce Pine.
