Jesus Interprets History
CHRIST PROPHESIES THE COURSE AND END OP AN AGE
Scripture?Lube nXQ-tlj ti:S:38.
By NEWMAN CAMPBELL
IN A RECENT lesson we
studied ths prophetic statement
about the coming: of the kingdom
of Cod in answer to the demand
of the Pharisees, ending with the
statement that "the kingdom of
God is within you." That was a
burning question of the day. When
would the Messiah come, bring
ing with him the kingdom of God
on earth? However, the Phari
sees had already renounced the
Messia' sent to them, and would
shortly put an end to His life on
earth.
The disciples must have known
that Jesus' enemies would put
Him to death as soon as possible,
but, looking at the temple in
Jerusalem, they spoke to Him of
its beauty?the decorations of
precious stones and the gifts it
contained. Jesus replied "the days
will come in the which there shall
not be left one stone upon an
other. that shall not be thrown
down."
When they asked Christ when
"And when theee things begin
to come to pass, then look up, and
lift up your heads; for your re
demption draweth nigh."
Now, nearly 2,000 years after
this prophesy by our Lord, our
world seems in greater turmoil
than ever. Many people have
prophesied the end of the world
since then, and have awaited its
coming, and felt that a millenium
was not far away. We have sur
vived two great wars and there
is now great unrest all over the
world. How will it all end? Will
Christ come soon and establish
His kingdom?
i At the end of His discourse,
Christ said, "Heaven and earth
shall paaa away; but My words
shall not pass away."
How true that is! The words '
of Jesus are more often remem
bered and quoted than those of
any man on the face of the earth.
We comfort ourselves with them
in sorrow and adversity; we strive
to guide our lives by them. Let us
also remember Jesus' warnings as
to our conduct until the time of
MEMORY VERSE

this would be. He replied, warning
them not to allow themaelvea to
be deceived, for many would fol
low Him saying they were Christ,
but Hi* disciple* should not heed
them.
When they heard of war* and
commotions, nations rising
against nations, great natural up
heavals such as earthquakes, fam
ines and pestilences, also great
signs from heaven, even when
they were persecuted in the syna*
gogues and cast into prison, they
should "in your patience possess
\ ye your souls," because "shall not
/ an hair of your head perish."
This discourse of the Lord's on
Tuesday of Holy week was the
last day on which He spoke to
assembled groups except to the
disciples. After all the terrors of
this day of judgment, Christ fore
told, "And then shall they see the
Son of man coming in a cloud
with power and great glory."
Hit coming: >
"And take need to yourselves,
lest at any time your hearts be
overcharged with surfeiting, and
drunkenness, and cares of this
life, and so that day come upon
you unawares.
'Watch ye therefore, and pray
always, that ye may be accounted
worthy to escape all these things
that shall come to pass and to
stand before the Son of man."
In the parable of the'fig tree,
Christ points out how with the
bursting of the leaves of the tg
and all other trees, men know
that summer is near. We all know
that when the leaves and buds
c<*ne on the fruit trees, summef
Is on the way, and we hope that
no killing frost will Might the
harvest Let us so live that we
need not fear whatever comes, but
can be serene knowing that we
can never Uve "beyond God's love
and cars."
