(County Arent's Photo) Swift Seeking 4th Straight Blue Win In All Star Game At Enka Friday Night Serious Mizell Now Hurling For Cardinals And Family i By FRANK ECK AP Ne wsfeatures Sports Editor ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (API It's Wllmer David Mlzell Sr. now. Yep, Vinegar Bend Is a changed man now that he's a lather. Ho'a alao a changed pitcher as batters In the National League will learn soon enough this season. Vinegar Bend no longer drawls about the $900 he got "for signing a St. Louis Cardinal contract !n my bare feet." That was in 1049. In 1992 Mlzell won 10 games as a rookie. The next year he won 13 when he learned to get the ball over the plate a bit better. He pitched last winter l.i Cuba and It was there that St. Louts manager Fred Hutchinson ?ug. gested he try changing speeds on his curve ball. "It worked good." says Mlzell. a native of Vinegar Bend. Ala. "But up here in the big leagues I don't know. I maj- have to put the pitch back in my pocket." Mlzell, 6 foot 3 and 212 pounds, has grown a lot since he came out of the Army a sergeant after two ' years. He also thinks and talks like a big leaguer now. He has lost practically all silly manner- ' isms which made him a Dizzy ' Dean type character, yet he still 1 has the devilish twinkle In his i eye when you talk baseball. I "When Eddie Stanley managed ! the Cards we talked about my play- I Ing winter ball," says Mlzell. "Then i after he left, the Cardinals decld- 1 ed it might pe a good idea If I WflLMER MlZELL tried it last winter. "It wasn't so much the money, i Just figured that if I wasn't doing inythlng why waste the time. I'm not laty, you know. I'll move up to St. Louis with the family then maybe when the season ends I'll go back to Vinegar Bend or maybe some place where I can get a win ter Job. I can't see all that time going to waste. I got a boy. He's (Vllmer David Jr., born Feb. 8." With his blaring fast ball that Coach Bill Swift of Waynesville High will be out to make it four In a row for the Blues when they meet the Whites in the fourth an nual Senior All Star basketball game at Enka Friday night. The Blue squad is made up of cagers from Haywood, Henderson, Transylvania, and Madison coun ties. and includes Don Jordan of Waynesville and center David An derson of Canton. The White team i^composed of Buncombe County players. Both squads will have only four practice sessions before taking the hardwood at Enka Friday nigbt. The Whites opened practice Monday at 4 p.mi, and the Blues started their workouts at 7 p.m. In the last three years, the Blues have won every game with the Whites and last year it was Joe Al dridgc of Waynesville who spark ed the Blues to victory. For his outstanding work. Aldridge was named tthe most valuable player ip the game. Among*the coaches expected to attend the game are Banks McFad den of Clemson, Murray Gleason of Wake Forest. William Roden of Gardner-Webb, Jim Hamilton of Lenoir-Rhyne, and Joel Robertson of WotTord. Other coaches probably will be on hand when the game gets under way. Referees for the game will be Gus Colagerakis and George Lan caster. The quarters will be of 10 minutes duration, according to an announcement by Patton, The White squad is composed of Eddie Hensley. 6-1 Vi, North Bun combe; Bill Barbee, 6-2V4, North Buncombe; Scott Coner, 5-9. Enka: Larry Davis, 6-1VS, Enka: Bruce Peterson, 6-1, Lee Edwards; Charlie Wilson. 5-9. Lee Elwards: Ervin Ingle, 6-3, Biltmore; Jackie Teague, 6-0. Leicester; Jack Ben fleld, 6-2, Reynolds; and Roy Israel, 6-0. Valley Springs. The Blue squad consists of J. B registered 173 strikeouts In 224 Innings in 1953. Mizell now has better control on his curve ball. Hutchinson and Card general Manager Frank Lane both appear quite conservative when they say Mizell ought to be a 20-game win ner. Once be starts winning, regular ly you can bet that colorful Frank Lane will see that Vinegar Bend turns on that rural charm again. The Cardinal's first object, of course, is to get back in the first division. Most of the baseball ex perts believe Miacll, the man, will put them there. SAUTt MUO r ill! taMth ?r?4ic?tor, tlMjr my."
