ANGLIN' AROUND M. T. (Boh) BRIDGES i IT ? tuning nme, regardless oi what the weatherman may aay about It. Easter cornea a little early thU year, and with the trout aeaaon opening next week, anglers are looking to their tackle, repair ing that which waa damaged in the latter part of the aeaaon laat year and cleaning and oiling reela In preparation for their try at out witting wily trout. The srtmon opens in ltorth Caro lina on April 5. and many of the streams have been restocked in preparation for that day. ?The weatherman has been throw ing curves at the flshermen for the paat week or so but the prospect of clearing and warmer weather is hoped for, especially for the ones who wade the swift flowing trout streams of thts area. Incidentally. If you are planning to try your hick In your favorite stream, you will likely see a differ ence this year from the one you fished last year. All the streams in thla area are carrying more water than at any time in the last few years Will thia be good for the man with the rod or not? That la ? big question. Quite a number of lake flsher mea hare braved the elements to try their hick in the lakes around this section. Some good reports have been coming in from Fentana, Hiawassee, Nantahala and a few others. Of the takea are still rising and are dingy, which ordinarily would hinder the ftshlng operation, but still good catches of crappie and a few nice bass have been re ported. Nantahala has produced a few nice trout so far thia year in the headwaters of the lake, but with weather being unfavorable, espec ially to the Aahertaan, only a few have tried their luck. It is rumored around Fontana that this is the year the lake will rise to Ita full height. With a little cooperation with the ones that eontrol the flow of water at the dam. thla could be the year that the lake could be filled. There is considerable more water flowing Into the lake than at any time since the lhke was formed for this time of . year. The water is still rising at the rate of about two feet every twenty-four hours. Access to the lake is getting better and better ai the water rises, which has been somewhat of a barrier heretofore. Getting a little closer home. : Lake Junaluska plans to open the j lake for flahing next Monday. | April 2. The lake has been cloaed | for ovw $ year to Ashing due to the e'.eanlng out of undesirable Hsh, mainly carp, and restocking with baas, bream and crappie. Wildlife department and a county or state license is required to be able to Ash, plus the normal Afty-cents a day fee put on by the Assembly. Baseball's most celebrated record ? the 60 home rune Babe Ruth hit (or the 1*7 New York Yankees ? la about to be broken. And who la going to do It? "Why. one of three men," gays Manager Birdie Tebbetts of the Cincinnati Redlegs. "There's our first baseman Ted Kluszewskl, Willie May* of the Giants and Ed Mathews of the Milwaukee Braves. "There is no question in my mind that the record is about to be broken. There are too many fellows with the potential. These three fellows all will have a better chance thla year. "1 think the guy who will break the record must have a good bitter back of him. It means the pitch ers must pitch to that big slugger batting in the third spot. I think Klussekski, who flit 49 home runs in 1954 and 47 last year, has the belt chance. With Wally Post hitting back of him the National League pitchers will pitch more to Klu. Post had his best season in 1999. He bit 40 home runs and batted .S09. Kluszewki and Post form the best one-two punch in both leagues. "Mathews has a good chance at Ruth's record because he hits * head of Hank Aaron who seems to be getting better. If the Giants come up with a solid hitter be hind Mays, watch out. Willie hit 91 last year and has ideas. "Duke Snider, with Roy Campan cila following him in the Brooklyn l'ne-up, has a good chance to hit 60. "Then there's Ernie Banks of Chioaon Wo HU aa u-* ---? <??? ti toji year ana he's only 25 and figures to get better. But the Cubs don't have a big stick to follow hina. "Only condition will operate against these men. Some of the parka are shorter than in the Babe's day, but today we play day and night ball and the hitters are facing better day-after-day pitching." The year Ruth hit 60, Gehrig at 24. batted .373; Lou and Babe formed the greatest one-two punch baseball has ever known. "There's no doubt that Gehrig's presence behind Ruth helped the Babe's mark," says Tebbetts "When Jimmy Foxx hit 68 in 1932 for, the Philadelphia Athletics be had A1 Simmons back of him. (Simmons hit .322 for his ninth straight time above .300.) And when Hank Greenberg hit 58 for Detroit in 1938 he had slugger Rudy York following him." Tebbetts, who caught 1,162 games in the majors, never was noted for hitting homers. But as a catcher he observed the great hitters. He's played with Williams In Boston and Greenberg In De troit. Ruth was 32 when he set his charmed 60 and Tebbetts points to the fact that Kluszewski will be 32 On Sept. 10. "You wouldn't want a better guy than big Ted to break Ruth's rec ord," says George (Birdie) Tebbetts. "He's the same kind of a guy Lou Gehrig was, and if he played in New York he'd be getting the same kind of publicity from sports writ ers that Ruth and Gehrig got. I'll give Klu the hit sign anytime. I think he should get every chance at the record." PHcher Marv Grlssom is the oldest player for the New York Giants. He la 38.
