Bjr newium iahu-dlu. EASTER SUNDAY?one of the gladdest days of the whole year! It is proof that the Holy Child whose birth we celebrate at the Christmas season, is, indeed God's Son and our Redeemer. There is much to be told and taught in this lesson so we must condense it as much as possible. 1 It was a day of overwhelming Joy In Christ's day, and it remains so , in our modern world. Very early in the morning, Luke tells us that Mary Magdalene, Mary, mother of James, and Joan na came to Jesus' tomb with other women to embalm His body with spices. They found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre, which was empty. As they stood, puzzled, two be ings in shining garments came and the women were afraid. The two said, "Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, hut is risen; remember how He spake unto you when He was yet in Galilee," and then they recalled how He had said He must be crucified, and would rise again the third day. They went to the apostles to tell them the Joyful news, but Moses ana oiner propneis wno nia prophesied these things from the beginning. As they came near the town J^sus seemed about to leave them, but they asked Him to stay with them as it was growing late. As He sat at meat with them, Jesus took bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them, Just as He did when He was with the disciples at the Passover. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him, but He vanished from their sight They said to each other, "Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way, and while He opened to us the Scriptures?" and they went back to Jerusalem. They found the 11 together, and they said, "The Lord is risen indeed, and hath ap peared to Simon. And the two men told about Jesus walking with them, and how they knew Him only when He broke the bread. "And as they thus spake Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you." All present were terrified, sup posing they were seeing a spirit. ? Peter, .however, hMtened to the sepulchre, looked in and saw it was empty, and he went away wondering what it was that had come to pass. That same day two men left Jerusalem for Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They .were not of the 12, and the name of one was Cleopas. While they were talking together of the ex* citing events which had just taken place in the city, another joined them. It was the Risen Lord, but the two did not know Him. He asked them what they talked of while they walked, and they asked Him if He did not know what everyone in Jerusalem was discussing?that Jesus of Nasareth was crucified but that morning His body was not found in the sepulchre, and it was said that angels had been seen there who said He was alive. Jesus then said to them: "O fools, and slow of heart to be* lieve all that the prophets have spoken; ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter Into His glory?" And He quoted the prophets beginning with troubled? and why do thought* arise la your hearts T Behold My hands, and My feet, that It la I Myself; handle Me and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see Me have." He showed them His hands and feet, and they could hardly be* lieve even then, for Joy. So Jesbs asked them for something to eat to prove that He was real and they brought Him Ash and honey* comb and He ate. Then He ex* pounded the Scriptures to them and reminded them that He had told them that He would be slain and in three days He would rise again. Jesus then told them to go about preaching repentance and the remission of sins, but not to leave Jerusalem until "ye be en dued with power from on high." Then He led them as far as Beth any, and Misstd them, and as He parted from them he was carried up Into heaven. "And they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and were continually in the temple; praising and blessing Ood." And so ends the Gospel ct Luke. hMd oa copyiifht?d outlines produced by tbe DtvMoa of ChrMtaa EduceUoa, tfettoool Council of durchee of Chrlnt loathe Ug. Like most little boys he finds the task pretty fascinating, and he revels in small seas of yellow and red and blue and green. '! Probably they'll stumble across some chocolate bunnies and candy chickens, also. But that will not be all of Easter for them. Johnnie and his sister will be going to Church, too. They , may not understand the complete significance of everything they hear and see ... but they are old enough to know some thing of what Easter means. And with each passing year they will learn a little more. < * * Johnnie's parents have started early to train their children : . in spiritual as well as physical values. Easter eggs, yes. But / Church, by all means, too. Not just on Easter, either . . ? t but on every Sunday in the year. % 1- ' ^ fx J- > ... . -? y $ THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . , ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth lor the building of character and good citizenship. ^ It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization ^ * can survive. There are four sound reasons why f every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support.
