The 1 Younger | Set 1 News Of WTHS I -by ^? I Barbara Griffith and Dorothy Grasty i ] It looks like the main event this week at WTHS was the Junior Senior Prom, which was a grand success. The prom was hald last Friday night in the high school cafeteria. A large crowd attend ed, and there was plenty of fun and entertainment for everyone. The cafeteria was looking its best and was decorated in night-club style. It really looked nice and the entertainment was the best pos sible. Just what do you think the big surprise and celebrity was? Who else but some members of the Key Club who imiated some great per formers, such as the McGuire Sis ters and Tennessee Ernie Ford..' The acting was fine, but the orig inal records helped a lot. The music was furnished by the Rhythm Cats from Cullowhee. The girls looked mighty pretty in those new evening dresses, and the boys did some shining also. It was one of the best dances the school has ever had and everyone had a wonderful time. The Key Club has elected new officers for next year. The leaders who will carry on the good work are: president, Ralph Prevost, Jr.; vice president, Jimmy Fowler; sec retary, Gerhard Liebscher; treas urer, David Hardwick. We want to congratulate Joe Jack McEvoy, a senior at WTHS, for his fine work in winning the George Foster Hankins scholar ship at Wake Forest College. Joe Jack is an active student at WTHS and plans to enter Wake Forest next year. Tuesday the WTHS student 1 body was entertained by the Lee Edwards High School Band. This 1 concert was certainly enjoyed by ' everyone. As a conclusion to the ' program, the band played several I Jazz pieces and a special drum solo. The seniors , were very disap pointed to hear that Mrs. Weiler 1 can no longer be the director of the senior play because of illness, but we certainly appreciate her hard work and cooperation. We were fortunate to get Mrs. Fred Campbell and Jimmy Hamilton, who will carry on and be the di rectors of the play. Last Tuesday some members of Miss Moseley's eighth grade class presented a one-act play called "Tell It To Tommy." The actors were: Dewight Green, Phillip Chase, Bob Evans, Tommy Walker, Ricky McCarroll, and Jane Ray assisting. This was just one of the many good plays Miss Maseley's class has presented. Junior High students were also entertained last week by the 55 piece junior band. The band mem bers gave a concert and played several of the selections they play ed at Cullowhee at the contest where they got a 2 rating. Monday the WTHS student body had an excellent movie on the theme of Easter, called "The Liv ing Bible." We also had some members of the U. S. National Park Service who showed some slides and told us the importance BIG SALE USED APPLIANCES OVERHAULED AND GUARANTEED 1? 3-speed RCA radio-phonograph combination. AM & FM. John's Will Save Good Friday Program At 5:45 (Contributed) On this day of our Lord's suffer ng and death on the cross the Church has never celebrated Mass, he sacramental reenactment of His leath. Instead, she Invites us to ake part with her in the Solemn Liturgical Afternoon Service of the Passion and Death of the Lord at 5 45. The first of these ceremonies la the Readings. We hear God's Word telling us about the Passion and I Death of Christ, first in two pro- | phetic passages from the Old Test- " ament, and then in the Gospel of s St. John. And we respond to God's | message by chants and prayers. ? The purpose of this ceremony is easy to see, God Himself, by His 1 word, is forming our minds and | imaginations and hearts to the im age of His Son dying on the Cross, f The Church trains us by her chants - and prayers to give the right re sponse to God's Word of love and mercy, the response to sorrow for sin, of gratitude, of love and desire to do God's Will. The second ceremony is the Solemn Prayers that the effects of Christ's Passion may flow out to the whole world. The third cere mony is the Adoration of the Cross. The fourth ceremony on Good Friday is the Communion Service. General Communion of the faith ful on this day was the custom in earlier ages of the Church, and is now restored once more. The Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession from the Repository. Then, led by the priest, we all to gether, pray the Our Father in Latin. We are asked to join in praying , the Lord's Prayer aloud because ( this is the oldest and most perfect , prayer of preparation for Com munion. Not only do we ask the Father for our daily Bread, but we express the spirit of forgiveness of one another's faults and failings and sins against us. This is the spirit in which we should receive the Sacrament whch Is to unite us to one another in Christ. Most es pecially on this day of His Death, when Our Lord gave us the ex ample of asking His Father to for give those who were crucifying Him, should we ask for His spirit Work Started On Thickety Cemetery Work is under way this week on the Old Thickety cemetery. A June wedding is planned. of forgiveness and forbearing, be fore we receive Him in Holy Com munion. This restored Good Friday Com munion gives us a special oppor tunity to unite ourselves sacrament ally to Our Lord In the mystery of His Death. As the Holy Father tells us in his Encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy, it Is our privilege, as baptised of Christ not only to join in offering, but to be offered in His Sacrifice. Let us ask Our Lord on Good Friday to remake us, to give us the grace to die more and more fully to our sinfulness and selfish ness by the power of His life-giving death. Thus we will be more and more fit to be included in His per fect Offering. In terms of daily living, this means that we are to find our true life less and less in doing what leads merely to our own pleasure success, and self esteem; and more and more in what leads to the car rying out of God's plan?to the lov ing service of one another for for Christ. This particular grace of "dying" is the special fruit of Com munion today.
