Power for a World Mission THE HOLY SPIRIT DESCENDS UPON THE BELIEVERS, Scripture-?Acts l?l. By NEWMAN CAMPBELL AFTER CHRIST ascended to heaven, the diaciples returned to Jerusalem. Before He left them, you remember in our last lesson, He told them to preach the gos , pel to all the world, but not to leave Jerusalem until they re ceived the Holy Ghost They had asked Hinj, "Lord, wilt Thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?" He had answered, "It is not for you to know the times or the sea sons, which the Father hath put in His own power." When they reached Jerusalem, the disciples went to the upper room of a house, probably the same room in which they had celebrated the Last Supper. All the 11 were there and so were tome women and Mary the moth er of Jesus and His brethren. They prayed fervently, and Peter then stood up as the leader, and spoke of David's prophecy about Judas the traitor and his them utterance." "And there were dwelling: at Jerusalem Jews, devout men of every nation under heaven." When people heard about this they were quite confounded, "because every man heard them speak in his own language." Some said, "What meaneth this?" others mocked, saying the apostles were full of new wine. Peter stood up and said that these men were not drunk at this time of day?it being the third hour, or nine o'clock in the morn ing?and the first Christian ser mon was delivered by Peter. He began it as preachers do to this day, with a text from a prophet, Joel. We have not space enough to Include this sermon of Peter's, but what we might call the conclu sion, we must quote: "Therefore ?let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye Cruci fied, both Lord and Christ." When the people heard these MEMORY VERSE "Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost f? come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses to Me both in Jerusalem, and <n all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."?Acts 1:8. violent death, and also quoted from the book of Psalms concern ing his fate. Then he said that one must be selected to take his place. One "ordained to be a witness With us of His resurrection." Two were appointed, Joseph called . Barsab&s, surnamed Jus tus, and Matthias. They all prayed, saying, "Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two Thou hast choaen." Then they gave forth lots, and the lot fell Upon Matthias, and he was num bered with the eleven. "And when the day of J?ente Cost (the 50th day after the Pass over) was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing wind, and it Ailed all the house where they were sitting. "And there appeared unto them Cloven tongues lik? as of Are, and tt sat upon each of them. And they were all Ailed with the Holy Ghost, and-began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave words they "were pricked in their heart," and asked Peter, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" And Peter told them that they must be baptized "in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." "Then they that gladly received his word'were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." After that the believers formed the first experiment in community living?and it was successful. Many such experiments have been tried since and all failed, but theaa people were truly Christian In spirit as well as In word. They lived happily together, those who had possessions selling them and sharing what they had with the others, every man ac cording to his need. They ate and prayed in one another's homes and praised God in the temple, "with gladness and singleness of heart" "And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."
