New Art Gallery Caters To Both Buyers, Browsers By JANE EAOS WASHINGTON?The collectors, the critics, the curious are all made to feel at ease when they drop into the little modern art gallery on a side street in Washington's George town section. The two young matrons, who opened the Obelisk Gallery of Art several years ago, are lust as hap py to welcome the browser as the buyer. One of the chief reasons for launching the venture was to en courage Americans to get into the habit of looking at pictutes and to foster an Interest in contemporary art. The gallery, originally financed by husbands of the co-directors, Kathryn Eicholz and Janet Rubin, is now self-eupporting and attract ing not only well known local art , collectors, but those from New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore ] "Young people who want to start 1 a collection are also coming to us to buy their first painting," the ' good-looking, young Mrs. - Eicholz said, "though some people come j here regularly and don't buy any- ' thing." As for the beginner-collectors, 1 Mrs. Eicholz says, the more they see, the more their tastes change. ' They start out with something pic- ' torial, or realistic but often wind j up with deep interest in the ab stract and ultra - sophisticated works. Many become repeaters. 1 The same sort of thing happens 1 with the browsers. They start out 1 asking questions; why we show this ' and that, why when you can have j a pretty landscape do you show a , difficult composition no one under- \ . stands. I , "The interesting thing Is that i people no longer are afraid to try < to penetrate an artist's statement, even though It may not be a pretty picture," Mrs. Eicholz explained. Once you get used to looking at pictures, new forms don't frighten vou any more." The gallery, formerly a private home, opened in October, 1952 with a collection of oils by a group of Italian painters. This was fol lowed by a continuing series of shows by contemporary American md European artists. Painters who have shown only In New York have become inter ested in showing in Washington ind new things are being offered to the gallery constantly. The two young women hope that through galleries like theirs, the work of good- young artists can be msde available to American art lov ers. ? ? ? Major and Mrs. H.
