PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)? Fred Hutchinson, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, has the traf fic problem licked. Once a week he flys home to Bradenton which is about 34 miles south. "I walk across the street and catch a plane for $5," says Hutch inson. "i get home in only a few minutes and it's less expensive than taking the car over the Sun shine Skyway. The Skyway is $1.75 each way and then you have to buy gasolina and then battle the traffic." Hutchinson is a year-round Brad enton resident. Muscle Building Exercises Put Punch In Kaline'sBat By FRANK ECK AP Newafeatures Sports Editor LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) ? A1 Kaline, the youngest ever to lead the American League fn hitting, did it all by himself. Nobody ever told him how to swing a bat and nobcdy probably ever will. The thought has been advanced that added weight over the 1954 season gave Kaline the power that moved the $32,000 bonus right fielder of the Detroit Tigers from .276 to .340 and from four home runs to 27. He only grins at that reasoning. "Nobody really helped my hit ting," says the modest 21-year-old right-handed slugger from Balti more. "X was always a good hitter. Even in high school I hit above .300." Didn't Ted Williams help his hitting? ~ "No!" replies Kaline. "Williams suggested I build my arms up and strengthen my grip with winter exercises. He used to swing a heavy bat during the winter and squeeze a rubber ball. I did these things and I believe they helped. I also do pushups from the floor with my hands. - "Another thing that helps me is that 1 never strike out very much. I generally manage to hit the ball." Kaline fanned 57 times In 1955 but that's not much when you con sider that 09 of his 200 hits were for extra bases. Kalfne got off to an amazing start last spring* hitting .380 after batting safely in 31 of his first 33 garnet. For 53 games he hit .383. He had hitting streaks of 15. 14 and 11 games and only once went four games without a hit. "Although I had a good jump on the field I was surprised that I led both leagues," says Kaline. (Richie Ashbum of the Phillies paced the National League with .388.) I was a bit worried after I was hit in the elbow by a Frank Sullivan pitch in Boston on July 31. "I was looking for a curve ball and Sullivan threw m? a fast ball on my fists. I was out three days (missed one game) and was in a terrible slump. I had a tough time getting started again." Kaline missed only two games all season as he became the first second-year man to pace his league since St. Louis' George Stone in 1906. Kayne missed a game after John Kume of Kansas Citv hit him on SeDt. 3. Albert William Kaline broke In to the majors *in late June. 1953 with a bonus contract that will end this June. He weighed 170 pounds. He now weighs 182. He's still a growing boy, and if he ever reaches 190 pounds the pitchers had better take cover. Herrshell Freeman. Cincinnati's relief pitcher, turned in a 2.15 earned run average during 1955.
