there are between 85.000 and 90,
)00 school children who are
physically handicapped, hard of
tearing, defective in speech, emo
tionally mal-adjusted, or mentally

ire so severely affected that they
ire, or should be, In Institutions.
Last year more than 300 chll

eason. an average of 115 mental

Speculation Rile
On Further Route
Of Pigeon Road
?
Haywood resident* who have
been following the progress of the
Pigeon Rive it road find that their
Interest continues as speculation
increases as to the route the road
Will follow after it leaves the riv
er near Clyde.
In commenting on the possible
routes, the Hendersonvllie Tri
bune suggests several possibilities.
It states: "The largest number of
speculators say that the new route
will follow the present Clyde-Can
ton-Asheville road to Enka, cross
over to N. C. 191, through Mills
River to the prison camp Just
north of Hendersonvllie". and per
haps "skirt Hendersonvllie on the
north and east." The paper con
tinues that from a point east of
Hendersonvllie the highway may
divide, with one prong heading
toward Greenville and the other
toward Charlotte.
"Another idea," the Tribune
says, "is that the highway will
miss the Hendersonvllie area en
tirely, that it will leave the Clyde
Canton area, head across the
mountain to Brevard and on to
ward Greenville." This idea may
have stemmed from the wartime
proposal of tunneling under Pis
gah Ridge upriver from the Pigeon
River bridge and emerging near
the ranger station on the Transyl
vania side.
"Another alternative is to fol
low the established route from
Clyde to Asheville or an entirely
new route between the two points."
The Hendersonvllie paper con
cludes, however with a word of
caution: "There might not be any
plans for additional construction
this side of Clyde . . . the route to
Watervllle is simply a new passage
into Tennessee."
