By NEWMAN CAMPBELL OUR LESSON today tells the dramatic story of Saul, who had seen Stephen die, consenting to his martyrdom, changed from a fire-breathing antagonist of the gospel of Jesus Into a devout disciple who became the instru ment of spreading Christ's gospel over the then known world. Can't you picture Saul, "breath ing out threatenings and slaugh ter against the disciples of the Lord," going to the high priest asking Tor letters to the syna gogue in the important city of Damascus in order to discover if there were men and women in that city who were converts to this new religion. If he found them,-he planned to bring them all, bound, to Jerusalem. As Saul and his companions neared Damascus, "suddenly there shined aroumf him a light from heaven." Saul fell off his mount and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?" i Saul said, "Who art thou. Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest." Saul then knew that Jesus was _i Actt 9:l-3t. \ church in Jerusalem, and had the authority from the chief priest* to bind all who called on tha Lord'* name. > However, tha Lord told Ana*' niaa, "Go thy way; for he ia V choaen vessel unto Me, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel; For I will show him how great things he must suffer for My name's sake." So Ananias went as he was to)d. found Saul, and put both hands on him, saying, "Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, hath sent me, that thou mightest re* ceive thy sight and be filled with the Holy Ghost." "And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales and he received sight forth* with, and arose, and was bap* tized." Ananias' manner of addressing Saul, of whom he had heard nothing but evil, was truly in tha Christian spirit calling him "Brother Saul." After Saul regained /his strength he spent some days with the Damascus disciples, then preached Christ in the syna* MEMORY VERSE "1 am not ashamed of the Gospel of Chritt; for it is the power of God under solvation to every one that bclicvcth." Romans 1:16. no mere man, but the Messiah that the Jews had long been ex pecting. Trembling and aston ished. Saul said, "Lord, what wilt Thou have me do?" The Lord an swered, "Arise, and go into the city, and It shall be told thee what thou must do." The men with Saul stood shaken and speechless as they heard the voice but saw no one. As Saul rose, they realized that he was blinded, so they led him into the city. Three days Saul lay without sight, and neither did he cat nor drink. In Damascus there lived a disciple named Ananias, and the Lord came to him in a vision and said, "Ananias," and he replied "Behold, I am here. Lord." He hsa told to go into the street called Straight (still standing in this ancient city), and ask for a man called Saul of Tarsus. Saul had been praying, the Lord told Ananias, and had a vision of Ana nias coming to make him see again, as he had been stricken blind. , Ananias said he had heard much of this man, that he was evil, having persecuted the no rfinvrifhtarf aiiMIba* bmw!??/??/! gogues, and all were amazed at his change of heart, but the en?. mies of Christ decided to kill him. They watched the gates of the city day and night, but Saul's friends took him by night and let him down by the city wall in a basket. When Saul arrived in Jerusa lem he tried to join the disciples there but they were suspicious of him. Barnabas, however, brought him to the apostles and told them what had happened to him and how he had preached boldly in Christ's name, so they accepted him and all the churches through* out all Judea, Galilee and Sa maria were glad. Saul or Paul, as he was later known, was blind for only three days, but there are thousands of persons in the world who are permanently blind, ror them the American Bible society has sent 18 Braille volumes of the St. James version of the Bible to the Paris Braille Lending library in Paris uAder the sponsorship of the American Foundation for Overseas Blind, whose counselor in international relations is Miss | Helen Keller. kw #K- TM.:- -J JU..-.,,.. ?-? *? -- ' h'stiontl Council of Churches of Christ in tSe U.S.A..
