Wishing Wells' Set Up For Area Cancer Campaign A cancer fund-raining and edu cational drive was opened in the Waynasville area last week with a klckolY dinner at The Towne House and the setting up of "wishing wells" by the sponsors of the cam paign. the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Wells were placed In both Waynesvllle and Haxalwood. In addition to collecting money to flnance research into the cause and cure of cancer, sorority mem bers will also carry on an educa tional campaign to educate the pub lic on "the seven danger signals of cancer" and the need for the early detection of the disease. Medical authorities reported that 243,000 Americans died from cancer last year. Another 80,000 had the disease, but were cured af ter It was detected In its early stace. Florida Produce Quarantine Urged WASHINGTON (AP) ? A fed eral quarantine on the shipment of frutt and produce from Florida ap peared imminent after an Agri culture Dept. hearing. Such a quarantine waa urged by Florida witnesses and others as the only effective means of con trolling a threat by the Mediter ranean fruit fly. The fly was dis covered recently in Miami. Ed L. Ayers, Florida Plant Com missioner. said after conclusion of the hearing there is "no question" but that the quarantine will be im posed. He said he expected it would go into effect about May 19. Ayers and other representatives of the fruit and vegetable growers of Florida arranged to meet with department officials this afternoon to discuss details of such a quar antine. Under such a quarantine, fruit and vegetables could be shipped out of the state after being certi fied as free of the fruit fly. The fly was discovered April 21 in Miami and is now reported con fined to a 20 square mile area of Dade and Broward counties ? at the fringe of the commercial cit rus belt. Stokes, of Grandvlew, was recently elected a member of the Duvall county school beard in Flor ida. This wy the first v.-nture into politics for Stokes, i nd he won with a majority of over 4.040 in a hard-fought race. He made several public addresses in Jacksonville and area, and over TV. Stokes' father, and Judge Mun son Anderson went down from here' for the last week of the cam paign to "lend a hand" in the clos ing days of the election. The term of office is for four years. DR. Kelley, a cannoneer* in the bat talion's Battery B, entered 'the Army in December, 1954, and com pleted basic training at Fort Chaf fee, Ark. He arrived in Europe In May, 1955.
