The martyred 1 Stephen had traveled to Phoe nicia, an ancient country famed i for its maritime ventures, north I of Palestine; Cyprus, a large ] island in the Mediterranean, and Antioch, but he preached only to Jews. Macedonians and Greeks were the principal inhabitants of Anti och. However, they, got along well with the Jewish inhabitants, who were allowed the ri^its of citizenship. As the disciples of Christ scat tered, some men from Cyprus and Cyrcne who spoke Greek came to Antioch and preached the word of Christ to the Greeks vhose reign extended from 41 to >4 A.D. Now the king, Herod Agrippa [I, decided to persecute these Christians in Jerusalem. He had Uready killed James, brother of lohn, and now he had Peter seized, chained and thrown into prison. Soldiers were appointed to guard him and see that he did not escape, and later Herod planned to bring him out and hand him over to the people who hated all Christians. Peter's com panions in the church prayed fer vently and continually for help to free him. Sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chsins, Peter was roused by a bright light An angel told him to arise quickly, and as he did so the chains fell from him. Then the angel told Peter to put on his sandals and garments and follow him. They went safely MEMORY VERSE "I have shewed you all things, how so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive." ?Acts 10:35. there, making many converts, "and the hand of the Lord was with them." Tidings of this were received at Jerusalem, and Barnabas was sent to Antiocn. He was "a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith, and much people were added unto the Lord" through him. Barnabas went to Tarsus, where Saul was, and brought him back to Antioch where the two remained for a year preaching, and it was In this city that the term Christian was first applied to the followers of Christ. To show how these early Chris tians acted their religion as well as professing It, a certain man named Agabus, prophesied that there would soon be a great famine in Judea. So to aid the saints in Jerusalem, the Antioch ians gave, every man as he was able, of his means, and sent It to Jerusalem by Saul and Barna bas. The Jerusalem church was poor and likely to suffer in a time of scarcity, and the famine came in the rule of the Emperor Claudius put the first and second guards to the iron prison gate, which opened of its own accord, and the angel guided him through the streets, then left him. Coming to himself Peter went to the house of John's mother, Mary and knocked. A maid an swered the knock, and was so surprised and delighted to see Peter safe that without letting him in she rushed to tell the others that Peter was there. They thought she had lost her mind, but as Peter continued knocking, they opened the door and saw htm, and knew that their prayer* were answered. You fan imagine the surprise and chagrin of the soldiers who had been given the task of guard ing Peter. They must have been frightened, too, and well they might be, u Herod had them put to death. Later, Herod himself met a tragic death, as you may read. While sitting on his throne in royal apparel and giving an ora tioh, the Lord struck him down because "he gave not God the glory" due Him. h?d on ropyrinhtrd outline product by the Dl virion of Oin??t?n Wucttion.
