MISS LOUISE ROBINSON, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Albert Robinson of Waynesvtlle. Route 1, is engaged to Kenneth S. Breed love, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Breedlove of Canton. The wedding la planned for next week. The bride-eleet is a menv ber of the senior class of Waynes ville High School. ? ? * Canton Club Hears Talk By Louis E. Gates The Canton Garden Club met Tuesday morning at Lake Logan Lodge, with Mrs. H. A. Helder as hostess. Twenty-two members were present, and guests were Mrs. C. A. Stone, Mrs. G. M. Trostel, and Mrs. F. R. Mease. Louis E. Gates of Canton was the guest speaker. His subject was "Summer Mulching". Mr. Gates stated, "Mulching is the applica tion of various materials to the soil surface to hold moisture, to prevent weed growth, to prevent erosion, to keep the ground cool, and, when decomposed, to furnish plant food." Mrs. J. L. Reeves and Mrs. A. W. Bottoms reported on the 31st an nual convention of the Garden Club of North Carolina, held re cently in Charlotte. Mrs. Roy Trammell discussed the judging of horticulture. Blue ribbons for horticulture specimens were won by Mrs. Wil lis Kirkpatrick, Mrs. Clyde R. Hoey, Mrs. A. P. Cline, Mrs. James B. Hurley, Mrs. Paul Hyatt, Ml-s. C. H. Eskridge, Mrs. Marvin Alex ander, and Mrs. L. H. Hartshorn. Arrangements will be placed in the Canton Library during the coming month by Mrs. Eskridge, Mrs. Fred Ferguson, Mrs. L. E. Gates* Mrs. Hartshorn, and Mrs. Helder. Following the meeting luncheon was held. * * * Awards Presented To Band Members At Canton Concert Senior members of the Canton High School band received awards at the spring concert Monday even ing and in turn surprised director C- J. Manle with a gift. Mr. Manle was presented with a wrist watch by band members. Senior award pins went to Shel ba Forrister. Darrell Hawkins and Marianna Moon. Arion awards were given to George Freeman and Glenda Pressley. Drayton Shull received a part scholarship from the Stephen Foster Music Camp and Diane Thomason was given the Jphn Phillip Sousa a ward. JIM GADDIS IS WTHS > 1 COUNCIL HEAD Jim Gaddis is president of the Student Council of the Waynes ville High School and participated in the coronation of the May Queen at the dance Saturday night instead of Jim Gaddy, as was in correctly stated in The Moun taineer this week. * ? * Mrs. J. M. Long is at home fol lowing a two weeks' visit with her brothers, Charles and Ernest Weav er, in Detroit. ? * ? Miss Linda Sloan arrived Mon day from Greensboro College to spend the summer vacation with her parents, Mr. <and Mrs. Ben Sloan. A rising senior. Miss Sloan served as chief marshal for com mencement exercises at the college last weekend. * * * The Friendly Club had its first outing picnic of the season yester day. May 23rd. Twentv-one towns men in four jeeps and one truck went to Deep Gap (beyond Lick stone i on the Waynesville water shed, where they enjoyed a picnic lunch, barbecue style.
