The Gospel Overcomes Paganism PAUL'S MINISTRY IN EPHESUS BRINGS JEWS AND GREEKS TO CHRIST Scripture?Act* IS tS?tt.tt; tphetian* i tS-lS. By NEWMAN CAMPBELL IN THE BEGINNING of our leMon we meet a fine man by the name of Apollo who. while he had been baptized by John the Bap tist. preached Jesus Christ, the Messiah. He came to Ephesus and preached eloquently in the syna gogue. He attracted the attention of Aquila and Priscilla, who took him with them and instructed him in God's ways more perfectly. While Apollo was in Corinth Paul came to Ephesus, and find ing a group of disciples there, he asked them if they had received the Holy Ghost. Upon learning that they had been baptised by John the Baptist, and had not heard that there was a Holy Ghost, Paul baptised them, then laid his hands on them and they received the Spirit. Ephesus was a great city, but its inhabitants were idolaters, so gether and told them their buei neu waa being ruined by thii preacher, Paul. The men were flUed with anger and they turned the whole city into an uproar ahouting, "Great ia Diana of the Bpheaiana!" The town clerk tried to quiet the mob, aaying that if the arti aana had anything againat Paul and hia diaciplea, they could have the law on them, but if not they ahould be quiet, and he dlamiaaed the people. Paul, reatleaa aa ever, felt the Spirit urging him to go back to Jeruaalem for the Pentecoet, al though he did not know what would happen to him there. He waa warned that he would meet with peraecution. but hia courage did not deaert him. Calling the eldera of the church together In Epheaue, Paul told them of hia deciaion, and they all knelt with him in prayer, then MEMORY VERSE 'Mightily grew the word of Ood and prevailed."?Acte I9:t0. Paul went to the synagogue and taught boldly. When many of the Jews refused to hear him, he con tinued his teachinf in the school of Tyrannus and remained two years in Ephesus, so that all in Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord Jesus. He also wrought many mira cles. Some took handkerchiefs or aprons that he had worn and healed those who were ill with them. Many believed and some who practiced magic arts, brought their books of magic and burned them in public. "So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed." Now in Ephesus was the mag nificent temple of Diana. Artisans in silver and other crafts made a lot of money producing silver shrines and other decorations for the temple. Demetrius, a silver smith, was alarmed when the worship of the goddess seemed undermined by Paul's teaching. He called the workmen te embraced him tearfully, because he told them they probably would see him no more. On his way to Jerusalem he and hla companions came to Tyre. Here they stayed for seven days, and when they were about to sail away, whole families accom panied them to the shore. All the people, men, women, wives and children, knelt on the shore and as he prayed with them they wept bitterly. The Apostles then went to Caesarea and stayed at the house at Philip, the evangelist, where a man prophesied that if Paul went to Jerusalem, he certainly would be bound and delivered into the hand* of the Gentiles. JM1 hen begged him not to proceed, Mit he was adamant and they were forced to let him go, saying 'God's will be done." They knew Paul was ready to be bound, even ortured or slain, for the sake of leaus Christ. ?Uw>d oa copyrighted outlines product by tht Division of Christian Education I ? v' . ? - ??* Central Cleaners Authorised Axents for Cravenette Water Repellent Church * Montgomery Stn^ Dial GL (-M71 Charlie's Drive-la Owners ?
