Pictured here is Jim Hamilton, sound encineer of the auditorium, at the controls which regulates the sound tone from 10 microphones and the output of 28 speakers. (Photo for The Mountaineer by CUfton Metcalf.) Modern Sound Equipment Added To Lake Auditorium A $2,000 DuKane low - level sound system, employing the lat est type'Lowell chandalier baffles, has been Installed in George Stuart Auditorium. Formerly all sections of the audience have been unable to hear proceedings on the stage clearly because of problems of feed-back in the old SUUna S>?C1I1 milUIlg UiiKi uiiiiBa. The new system remedies those problems. The system has ten microphone units with facilities for mixing any four of the 10 in a special pre amplifier and driver unit. This low-level system contains 28 speak ers and is the largest of its type in operation in Western North Carolina. Another feature of the system is four boom microphones suspended strategically through nut * ho caoHna arna nf thp oiirii. I torium enabling persons seated in the audience to participate in panel discussions, question and answer sessions, and other pro ceedings. The system also accom modates special hearing aid de vices for more than thirty people. A representative of Southern School Service, Inc., of Canton, who installed the system, said that "the Stuart Auditorium represent ed one of the most difficult sound engineering jobs in this area, due to the unique structure of the building ? no ceiling, cement floors, and size." "The speakers are chandalier type and are spaced approximate ly twenty-five feet apart through out the seating area of the audi torium. Thus enabling the entire audience to hear distinctly and clearly." The latest television and radio broadcast type microphones were also installed with the system. Pro visions were made for feeding the arc 16mm sound projector output through the low-level speakers. It took three men about two weeks to install the system, which is now ready for operation. One man can operate the system. He simultaneously controls all ten re mote microphones, regulating the tonal quality as well as many other things. ?
