Miami end Port Lauderdale, Pie.,
reel estate broker and former ama
teur golf star, died at bis home
in Port Lauderdale Tuesday after
an illness of several months.
For the past 20 years he had
spent his summers here and owned
a motor court here at the time of
his death.
Last year he had built a new
summer home.
Palmer was one of the original
developers of Miami and Miami
Beach and had built and once
owned the Columbus Hotel of Mi
ami.
In sports, he was 1226 Florida
state amateur golf champion and
had won aeveral tournaments in
the South, Including a Biltmore
Forest Country Club event near
Asheville.
Among his close friends was
former national golf star Bobby
Jones. He and Jones had played
aeveral private matches.
' Palmer Is survived by his wife.
Funeral services were held to
day. Burial was in the family ploi
in Miami.

Dead, said both the trunk bed and the tracks of
the bulldoaer were muddr. causing the earth
moving vehicle to elide off the truck, driven by
Melvln Meeeer of Waynesvilie. The truck and
bulldoaer are burned by Paul Bryeon of Haselwood.
Marihalt Hannah's taxi was damaged in the ac
cident to the extent of S456. The taxi, in tarn,
struck a 1956 Chevrolet owned by James Rufus
Marcus, causing damage estimated at UN.

Honored Friday
At Housewarming
Mr. and Mrs. David Burch, who
recently moved into their new
home on the Thlckety-Clyde Road,
were honored with a housewarming
Friday night. Mrs. Jessie Clark,
Mrs. Maxioe Queen, Mrs. Charles
Jacobs, Jr., and Mrs. George
Wright acted as hostesses and
served refreshments during the
evening.

Mrs. Paul Barefoot of Wash
ington, D. C , Who Is spending
several days with her mother. Mrs
Cora Flynn, in Canton, visited rela
tives in the community the latter
part of the week and Sunday.
S/Sgt. Carlyle Ford, who has
been stationed at Alexandria, La.,
has been assigned to a six months' j
lour of duty In Italy. He spent ;
a few hours here with home folk
last week. He Is the son of Arthur
J. Ford and the late Mrs. Ford.
Harris Sorrells. who Is a mem
ber of the Naval Reserve, has been
on a cruise oft the coast of Florida
the past two weeks.
Mrs. John F. Whitted is a patient
at the Haywood County Hospital
where she has been undergoing
treatment the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Moore and
children of Pasadena, Texas, are
visitlg their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
J. E. Moore and Mr. and Mrs. Abe
Huffman.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hipps en
tertained members of the Junior
class of Rockwood Sunday School
Sunday at a picnic on Crabtree
mountain.

Three of the Colorado 4-H visi
tors who are on an exchange trip
to Haywood County this week are
being entertained in homes of the
community. Miss Delia Jane Cap
per is the guest of Miss Estelena
Itobinson; Miss "Lois Berry the
guest of Miss Marilyn Burch; and
Miss Marilyn Marcelyn is the guest
of Miss Judith Harris.
The Wesleyan Service Guild will
hold its regular meeting tonight in
the home of Mrs. David Burch.
Mr. and 'Mrs. Jesse Ford and
their granddaughter, Luanna Ford,
spent Monday night at Brevard
with their daughter. Mrs. Spencer
Walker, and Mr. Walker.
The WSCS of Rockwood Church
met last Thursday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Harley Wright. Mrs.
Roy Robinson presided and was in
charge of the program. "Our Com
munity in the World" was dis
cussed by Mrs. Jim Harris. Mrs.
W. M. Williamson and Mrs. M. T.
Cars well.
Reports were heard during the
business and pledges for the new
year were taken. Flowers were
sent to one of the members in hos
pital. Following the meeting a so
cial hour was enjoyed and refresh
meats were served from the newly{
decorated kitchen and dinette.

The grounds have been cleaned,

Jack Harris, with Mrs. James
Smith co-hostess.

Saturday night at Fontana.
The Baptist Brotherhood of Oak
Grove Church is continuing the
study of the Brotherhood manual
this week.
Around 40 children have en
| rolled in the Vacation Bible school
vhich opened at Rookwood Church
Monday morning. Classes will con
tinue through Friday and a review
of the work will be given at the
morning service Sunday, followed
by a picnic lunch on the church
lawn.
