Letters of Faith and Encouragement NINE EPISTLES EXHORT US TO BELIEVE IN CHRIST, AND STRIVE FOR HIS PERFECTION Scripture?Luke 9 28-36; Hebrews 13:9, 18-23; I Piter 1:1-8; 8-li 25; It Peter 1:1-8; 15-18; Jude 3, 17-85. By NEWMAN CAMPBELL THIS LESSON may be rather difficult for the younger classes and for the teachers, too, as, from following Paul's travels, his activities, arrest, trials, etc.? scenes of action?we turn to the spiritual side of life?the subject of faith in times of trouble, of Christ's example in this matter, and in His everyday conduct when He was on earth. The transfiguration of Christ, which is our first reference, will greatly interest children, as, if the incident is told vividly, it will be stimulating to the imagina tion of both young and older pupils. Taking Peter, John and James, Jesus went up on Mount Hermon to pray. As He knelt in prayer, suddenly His face was altered and His clothing became white and glistening. Two men were in the holy mount." ?>>. In his first epistle Peter say* that if a good man suffers for something of which he is not guilty, but bears the injustice courageously, he is acceptable to God. Peter then writes of Jesus, the Sinless One, who endured agony for our sakes on the crors; whose life was an example for us to follow: "Who when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered. He threatened not." ( The subject of juvenile delin quency, so widely publicized to day, might be a topic of discus sion with children of all ages. In his request to the Hebrew breth ren to pray for him, Paul says: "We trust we have a good con science, in all things willing to live honestly." There are many temptations for young folk today?more than in former years, according to a MEMORY VERSE "Jesus of Nazareth .... went about doing good."?Act* 10 3S. r with Him, Moses and Elijah, tell ing Him of His coming death. The apostles were "heavy with sleep," but awoke and saw Christ's glory and the men who stood with Him. As the two left, Peter began' to talk to the Master, but a cloud overshadowed them, making them afraid. Out of the cloud which engulfed them, came a voice say ing: "This is My Beloved Son: I ar Him." The three apostles were over come with awe?however, they told no one of this experience, but Peter remembered it all his life. In his second epistle he says: "For He received from God the Father, honor and glory, when there came such a voice to Him from the excellent glory. This is My Beloved Son. in whom I am well pleased. And this voice yvhich came from heaven we heard, when we were with Him woman who has studied the prob-' lorn. Families moving to new and unfamiliar neighborhoods; cars in which to travel and which are a temptation to many young peo ple; parents who both work or are separated, all add to chance* for youngsters to get into situa tions which lead to delinquent behavior. ) Even small children know what conscience is, or they should if, they are correctly trained. They; should be taught to resist any temptation that their "secret voice" tells them is wrong, re membering Jesus Christ, who loved little children end would have them be good. Assure them that Christ will help them to do right if they ask Him for His aid. The teachers must read the Scriptures assigned for today's study carefully and adapt the portions they choose to the in terest of the group* they instruct. THE LAND OF THE FREE One of the first landmarks the European traveler sees as he approaches this country is Bartholdi's famous Statue of Liberty. The artist here has deftly drawn a broken chain across the background of freedom's holy light, signify ing that oppression and human slavery cannot exist in a land of free people. But freedom involves much more than an unshackled body and the possession of civil and political rights. One may possess all these and still be a slave to his own y weaknesses. True freedonvcncompasses the mind and soul of man ? as well as his body and his political relations. Men are W enslaved by vicious habits, by their ignorance, preju L dice, selfishness and hate. Religion is the mother of freedom, and the Church has been its chief and most constant exponent. Jesus said, "The truth shall make you free," and . the truth is embodied in the Holy Scriptures. No chains can fetter the soul of the man who dwells in the light of God's freedom. A ?'> -- zryz 4 '. THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . Z Z?
