Senator Ervin Is Opposed To Increasing Forgein Aid WASHINGTON?A? this is being written, we ere debating the de feme budget in the Senate. AIR FORCE FUNDS I support the move by the Sen ate Appropriations Committee to increase the defense budget by $1.1 billion to try to recapture the emphasis on sufficient defense for our country. The defense cuts car ried out by the Administration threaten our security as a free na tion. This is no idle comment, in my sincere opinion, as I feel that such is true from the testimony of top-level witnesses we have heard testify before the Air Inquiry Com mittee of which I am a member. As a consequence of this Inquiry, it is reasonable to assume that the trend in defense cuts may be halt ed. TEXTILES There is a move afoot to tack on an import quota amendment for textiles when the Foreign Aid Bill comes up for action in the Senate. Senator Green was unsuccessful in getting his amendment accepted by the Foreign Relations Committee. I plan to support with all my abil ity legislation to halt what I be lieve is a complete perversion of the original idea of reciprocal trade, and the virtual disruption of a vital segment of our economy. I FOREIGN AID There is strong sentiment around Congress that the Administration has failed to make out a case for incerased foreign aid spending. Here is a basic and fundamental is sue. It cannot be brushed off light ly. The Senate is likely to support the cuts that the House made. For two years I have carefully followed the arguments that have been made for Increased foreign aid. I have | not been convinced that the argu ments are sound. There was a need to help struggling countries after the war. We did that, restoring ] many nations to better economies that they enjoyed prior to the war. ] I subscribe to the theory of mili tary aid and some technical assist ance. but think that foreign eco nomic aid cannot be justifiably in creased at this time. Our attention was directed to the slow but sure rate at which our civilization is moving into the atomic era. Last week the Senate passed a bill authorizing the con struction of an atomic-powered merchant ship. The President push ed hard for this and the Congress was glad to go along with the idea. ? OTHER LEGISLATION The Senate also passed and sent to the House a bill to change gov ernment budgeting and accounting ; procedures as recommended by the Hoover Commission. It would re quire government agencies to pre pare budget estimates on the basis |of accrued annual expenditures. It' is designed to eliminate the multi-1 billion dollar carryovers of funds for defense, foreign aid and the like. I .. :? ROY S. DEARSTYNE, head of the N. C. One of the best known figures in 'North Carolina agriculture. Dear styne retire# from State College June 30 after 35 years of service. He came to State College as pro fessor of poultry science in 1922 and was promoted to department head in 1931. 105 Champions Set 15-Year Party At Camp Hope 28th Outdoor recreation, after-dinner entertainment and good fellowship will feature the annual 15-year con tinuous service group party sched uled for Camp Hope Thursday, June 28. Carolina Division of the Champion ' Paper and F.ibre Company are eligible to attend the event. ; Slightly more than 100 of these be come eligible this year after com pleting 15 years of continuous ser vice. Lewis Clark Thomson, vice-presi dent of administration and secre tary of the Paper and Fibre Com-, pany, will be the principal speaker. He makes his headquarters in gen eral office, Hamilton, O. H. A. Helder, vice-president and general manager of the Carolina division, will welcome the guests who have between 15 and 20 years of continuous' service to their credit. Responding to Helder's address of welcome will be Frank Davis, supervisor of Plant Protectiqn at the Carolina division. Fred Ferguson, supervisor of tax and insurance, will preside over the annual event, and the Rev. Ben L. Ray, pastor of the Canton Calvary Baptist Church, will give the invocation. A program of out-door and in door recreation is planned to begin at 4 p.m., and dinner wiU be serv ed at 6:30 under the general super vision of Mrs. Hattle Grube. Lowell Blanchard and his WNOX Variety show, Knoxville, will sup ply entertainment as an after-din ner feature. Included in this group will be the Melodyaires quartet, the Red and Fred comedy team and Tony Musco, specialty entertainer. Sam Lane, general chairjnan. said there woulii .be seven rides in operation on the High Schools grounds, from Monday July 2nd through Saturday July 7th. There will be added this year,"three skill games for the adults. The games have been bought by the Club and will be operated by the mem bers. They will include "Feed The Clcwn" a toss game; a baseball throw game at milk bottles, and a dart game to balloons. On the evening of the Fourth of July, the club will Jiave a gigantic fireworks display, of over 100 pieces at the football stadium. The firemen of the two towns will ' handle the fireworks. Baseball games of the L'iltle i League and Pony League are { scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Wed nesday and Saturday. The league members will also handle the ice cream and candy concessions, while the Hazelwood PTA will have the food concession, with the proceeds gcing into their recreational fund. | The seven rides, owned by Wil I liams Company, will include: ferris wheel; merry-go-round, two kiddie rides, swing, octupus and loop-o I plane. | The schedule of operation calls for every evening and all-day Wednesday and Saturday. Craftsman's Fair Slated' July 16-20 July, puts the spotlight o n North Carolina's treasure-trove of handicraft centers and skilled craftsmen, since it is traditionally the month for the annual Crafts man's Fair of the Southern High lands at Ashevllle. The Fair will be held July 16-20 at the Asheville Auditorium, where craftsmen from North Carolina and six other states will display their handiwork and demonstrate their skills in weaving, pottery. Jewelry making, basketry, and other crafts. Small fry will like raisins added to mashed sweet potatoes. Two Accidents Reported By State Patrol Two traffic accidents which oc curred last week were reported to The Mountaineer too late for in clusion in Monday's issue. Raymond G. Shepherd. 17, Route ' 3, Canton, suffered multiple bruises and abrasions at 8:45 a.m. last Fri day when he lost control of his 1947 GMC truck on old U. S. 19 near the Canton VFW post home. Patrolman W. R. Woolen of the State Highway Patrol said that Shepherd's car ran off the right shoulder of the highway and then overturned twice. Damage to the truck, termed "a total loss." was estimated at 8200. Highway 19A-23 In front of the Dayton Rubber Co. plant was the scene of another accident last Fri day when a 1950 GMC dump track driven by James Ray, 21, at the Dellwood Road, collided with a 1953 Pontiac driven by Ned Brown, 29. of Waynesvllle. Patrolman Wooten reported that the truck made a left turn just as the passenger car started to pass. Ray was charged with failure to signal and failure to t have turn ? signals on his truck. Damage to the passenger car was put at $150 and to the truck at $50. Air Alarm OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ?Two detectives admitted they are not so hot at detecting fire.
