Thickety Working On A Community Fire Department The Thickety CDP met at the Park Friday evening, with Sherrell Jimison. chairman, presiding. He reported on progress that has been made toward the establishing ot a fire department in the community, stating that application for char ter, and other necessary prepara tions were underway. A gift of a new electric coffee urn for use at the park was re ported. This was donated by the Good Neighbor Club, composed of women from this and an adjoining community. Several residents of the com munity attended, and enjoyed re freshments and roasted marsh mallows on the open fire. Three attendance awards were presented (o. Don Jimison, small son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jimison; Mrs. George Wright and Lloyd Parham Sr. Invitations are being issued to the marriage of Miss Nancy Kay Hipps. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herschei Hipps, and Joe Bob Mc I Dowell of Pasadena, Texas, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. JJcDowcll of j Canton. The wedding will be held in the Rockwood Methodist Church 011 Wednesday evening, July 11, a' 7 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Shipman have moved to the Mann Apart ment on Newfound Road. Miss Jean Trantham who has been a student at Gardner-Webb College the past year, has arrived home for the summer. N. M. Medford suffered the loss, of a thumb last week, when he j accidentally cut himself with an axe. The Wesleyan Service Guild met Thursday eveuing at the home of Mrs. David Burch, with twelve j present Mrs. Charles Jacobs, Jr., gave the devotional, and Mrs. Mary Rob- | inson v. as program leader. Mrs. Ray McDowell presided over the business when reports were heard, and projects for the coming year discussed. '??' ' '' ' ' Closing exercises for the vaca tion Bible school were held at Huckwood Church Sunday, with children enrolled in the school presenting the program. After the service a picnic lunch was enjoyed I in the recreation rodtn. ' Mr. and Mrs. Olin Tatham and daughter, Sherry Dawn, have re turned from a two-weeks-vacation trip to Daytofia Beach. Fla. James Willis plans to at tend the Intermediate Assembly I at Camp Tekoa next week. Petty Officer 1/c Garrett Sor , rells of San Diego. Calif., is spend ing a 30-day leave with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Sorrells. He is accompanied by his wife and daughter, Delores. Petty Officer Sorrells has com pleted sixteen years in the Navy, : atjd recently re-inlisted for another | four-year period. He is serving aboard a submarine tender, the U. S. Sperry, as a refrigerator technician. He is a veteran of World War II during which time he was engaged in both the Euro pean and Asiatic conflicts. For the past ten years he has been residing in San Diego. He is one of five brothers who have been in various branches of military service. A younger brother, J. C. Sorrells, Jr., who plans to * make the Air Force a career, is stationed at the Donaldson Air Force base in Greenville, S. C. Vacation Bible School will begin at Oak Grove Church Monday at 9 a m? under the direction of James Parham. supply pastor, and Mrs. Howard Dotson.
