Strength Through Trial CHRIST'S EXAMPLE TEACHES US HOW TO RESIST TEMPTATION Scripture?Matthew 4James t. By NEWMAN CAMPBELL 'IF WE READ the headlines in the newspapers we are likely to think that there are more temptations in today's world than ever before in history, and that more people yield to them than ever before. Even more children seem to indulge in crime than in any previous generation. Be that as it may. even Jesus Christ was subject to temptation, but He remained sinless. As He sets us the example in all our ?ons by His stainless life while (was on earth. He also shows low we can resist Satan. Small children as well as older ones meet with temptations. A child may be tempted to steal money that is caretcssly left with in reach: or he may be assailed by a desire to take a package of candy from the store in which his mother is shopping or some fruit from a stall. If he is detected he will be was: "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Then Satan took Jesus up to a pinnacle on the top of the tem ple, saying that if He should throw Himself down, angels from God His Father would see that He came to no harm. Jesus said, "It is written again, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." A third time Satan tried, tak ing Jesus to the top of a high mountain where there was a view of the world in all its glory, say ing: "All these things will I give Thee if Thou wilt fall down and worship me." "Get thee hence, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve," Christ an swered. Satan went away then, and Christ's hunger for food was assuaged by angels. In his Epistle to the 12 tribes of Israel who were scattered in MEMORY VERSE " Blessr d it the man that cndureth temptation: for when he i.t tried he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him.''?dames I t2. punished, and if not he will have a feeling of guilt. His conscience will tell him it was wicked to steal and whatever he thefted will not be enjoyed as he thought it would. If he has been brought up by honest parents or taught that when temptations come he will be helped if he asks Jesus to give him strength to resist, it will banish the impulse to do wrong. The phrase, "The temptation of Christ" seems strange. How could Jesus be tempted? He had no evil desires, and this tempting took place Immediately after His baptism and before He had entered on His earthly ministry. Jesus* temptations were three in number. The first came to Him after He had spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness alone without food. Naturally, as a man. He was hungry. Satan ap peared at His side and said that if He really was God's Son and holy. He could change the stones at His feet Into bread to satisfy His graving for food. His reply Based on ronvri*>hts?/* various provinces of the Roman empire, James, a relative of Jesus, although not an apostle, but a true Christian, gives us a wonderful picture of how we may avoid temptations. In fact he writes: "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations." Be patient, he writes. If yo?a lack wisdom, ask God and He will strengthen you, if you ask in faith. "Let the brother of low degree rejoice in all his ways. But the rich be glad that he has been brought low," for both must die. And finally, "Blessed is the man that endurelh temptation, for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Cord hath promised to them that love Him." The entire chapter of James should be earnestly read and meditated upon by the teachers. In it they will find many suggea tions for the teaching of the les son for both the younger and older pupils. Puppies are generally more resourceful than people! They never take fences seriously. They find a way to get over or under the obstacle. People take fences seriously. They usually have more respect for their limitations than for their abilities. That's why so many of us live in a narrow, discouraging world with out promise or hope. And even as we speak thrilling words like freedom and opportunity and ideals, some of us wonder secretly just what these are and how they may be attained. There are spiritual'resources in life which can enable any man to achieve ideals. They are the simple, commonplace commodities of religion?things like prayer and faith?but they are the keys to all attainment. God gave us these resources to use. And He gave us churches to teach us how to use them. Forget your fences? discover your resources in Church next Sunday. h , ? ? I ^ ^ " * ' " j ? ' ' : ' . , THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . .
