\r^ THE WAYNESVILLE MOUNTAINEER lop Harmon To Dedicate Two Methodist Buildings In Haywood Sunday CLYDE CENTRAL METHODIST CHURCH Services Set At Canton And Clyde Bishop Nolan B. Harmon of the Western North Carolina Confer ence of the Methodist Church will be in Haywood County Sun day to dedicate two church build ings. At 11 a.m. Bishop Harmon will dedicate the new educational building at the First Methodist Church of Canton, and at 3 p.111 the Central Methodist Church at j Clyde. At Canton, a lunch will be held in the fellowship room of the edu cational building following the dedication service. According to the pastor of the church, the Rev. 1. L. Roberts, the new educational building has 10 classrooms, a dining - fellowship room with a stage for plays, a well equipped kitchen, and restrooms. Rev. Roberts pointed out that his congregation has never been in debt on the building of the new structure, but has paid for it as construction has progressed. The foundation was laid in the fall of 1953. and the building was first put to use in 1954 It is now valued at S75.00J ? with much of the labor being donated by members of the congregation. The public has been invited to attend the Canton service. At Clyde the dedication of the Central Methodist Church in the afternoon will be preceded by the morning worship at 11 a m , at which time the message will be brought by the Rev. \V. T. Medlin. who was pastor when the present hurch sanctuary was opened in March, 1949. Rev. Medlin is now pastor of a Methodist Church at Gastor.ia. Following the morning service, a picnic lunch will be held on : the grounds at 12:30 p.m. Special music will be presented at both morning and afternoon services by the church choir under the direction of Miss Janice Smath ers, and a solo will be suns dur ing the latter program by Ilichard Mipps of Lake Junaluska. The public is invited to both services. The present pastor of the Clyde Central Methodist Church, the Kev. G. C. Starr. Jr., said that the church's property is now valued at more tnan $80,000. In the past four years, he re lated, the church budget has been more than doubled, six new class rooms have been built and six new Sunday school classes organized, grounds have been landscaped, all rooms have been painted, and pianos have been donated for the sanctuary and the prayer room Church members have donated | their labor in constructing and painting classrooms As a community project, the Central Methodist Church has also installed chimes in its tower and vibra-chimcs 011 its organ. Tne tower chimes are played each weekday evening at 6:15 and on Sunday at 8:30 and 9:30 for a 15 rhinute period, and the music is lteard throughout the town of Clyde. The tower chimes are played automatically by record, and mem bers of the community?many from other churches ? have responded enthusiastically in contributing money to buy records. Rev. Starr estimated that his congregation hn? raised more thau $ 18.000 t his year for all causes. The Rev. Mr. Hollis, pastor of the church, will deliver the mes sage at the morning worship serv ice. There will also be a program of singing and speaking in the afternoon. All members of the families and friends are invited to attend and bring a picnic lunch. Memorial Services To'Be Held In Fines Creek A memorial service will be held at Redmond Cemetery at Lower Fines Creek, Sunday. September 2, beginning at 11 a.m. Graves will be decorated in the afternoon. Everyone interested is invited to bring a picnic basket and attend the program. BISHOP NOLAN B. HARMON Grooms Receives Degree From SMU Donald A. Grooms, son of Mrs. Lockie Grooms, HFD 3, Canton, re ceived the degree of bachelor of art sin journalism in commence ment exercises at Southern Metho dist University Monday. Grooms is a graduate of Bethel High School, and attended Florida Southern Colege, at Lakeland. Cove Creek Baptists To Have Homecoming The Cove Creek Baptist Church will observe Homecoming Day on Sunday. September 9. The program will begin at 10 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. The Rev. Carl Cook, pas tor of the church, will preach at the morning service, which will be followed by a picnic lunch.
