Legion Announces Speaking Contest; $8,000 In Awards

lual American Legion Oratorical

forth Carolina have been an

Grove said that all preliminary
irrangement* were completed this
veejc and that the Contest this
car will eclipse all previous ef
orts in the State. It is estimated
hat 2,000 high school students
i^rticipated in the Contest last
ear
Students participate in contests
through County, District, Division, ?
State and National competition
under American Legion sponsor
ship. The National winner receives
a $4,000 college scholarship; sec
ond place National winner receives
a $2,500 college scholarship, third
place National winner receives a
$1,000 college scholarship, and 4th
place National winner receives a
$500 college scholarship.
Each school participating will
select a representative to enter the
; County Contest on or before Feb
ruary 11, 1857. The North Carolina
State Finals contest will be held on
March 8. J 957. ,
Chairman Grove said that these
contests are a National American
ism activity of The American Le
gion. The subject used must be
on some phase of the Constitution
of the United States which will
give emphasis to the attendant
duties and obligations of a citi
zen of our government
