Election Of Congressmen Important To Both Parties By SENATOR SAM EKVIN WASHINGTON ? Recent Con gresses have seen a close numeri \ cal division betwee/i Democrat* and ' Republirlns. The 84lh Congress consisted of 49 Democrat* and 47 ' Republican*. CLOSE DIVISION The general election on Novc-m . ber 6/ will determine the make-up of the Senate for the next two yeais. Of course death* and reslg ' nation* can change the political J complexion of a Congress when the balance is so close. [ Recently I studied a pamphlet on information about the political ' division of the S>-nate during the past century. The facts were inter ' eating. 1 A CENTURY , The 34th Congress took its seal , in 1855. The nation had a total ' of 62 Senators at that time com pared with the present 96 (two for each stale In the Union). Of that total. 42 were Democrats, 15 were ' Republicans and 5 belonged to oth ' er parties. The high water mark ' for Democratic Senators was in the 75th Congress (1937-39) wltn a ' total of 75; that Congress had 17 1 Republicans and there were 4 Sen 1 ators listed as belonging to other 'I parties. ' I l mnx r ? - ?* ?* ? IH7 I C>DO Democratic Senatorial power was at its lowest ebb with only 11 members in the period of the War Between the States and Recon struction it was in the 41st Con , gress that the Republicans had 61 seats, and they also reached their maximum of 61 In the 60th Con gress from 1007 to 1000. At the lat ter date there were 20 Democrats in the Senate RECENT DIVISION , The last Congress to show a con , tolerable political division was the BKt < 1049-fil > w ith 14 more Demo . crats than Republicans. Since that time the 82nd, 83rd and 84th) the , political division has been very j thin numerically. And when the j time came to organize the Senate It , was necessary tor each political party to have every member pnes , enl. ( I will not discuss the political , division of the House of Repre- j j tentative* except to say that the present division shows 232 Demo crats and 203 Republicans The last time either body of Congress was organized due to I death was in the 72nd Congrcsa (1931-33* when the House was or ganized by Democrats, CHIPS ARE DOWN It can be seen that, as a conse quence of the close political divi sion in the Congress, no effort is being spared by both parties to control the Congress. It has also developed a greater awareness of the make-up of Congress among the people. Not only will November 6. gen eral election day. be important in the quest for the Presidency, but the voters will determine who will run the Congress for the next two years which will be the 85th Con gress. ? < NOTICE OP PROPOSED ORDINANCE Ol THE TOWN OF WAYNESVILLI TO EXTEND ITS CORPORATI LIMITS All persons owning propert) within the area hereinafter descrtb ed, and* all qualified voters reskd ing within the area hereinaftei desci^bed. proposed to be annexcc by the Town of Waynesville, ant all qualified voters residing wlthir the corporate limits of the Towr of Waynesville will take notice tha the Mayor and Board of Aldermer of the Town of Waynesville wil meet on Wednesday. Gay Halloween Treats Are Easy To Make, Serve I AP Ncwsfeaturcs WHY NOT have a Trick* and Treats pick-up for hungry little ghosts and goblins after they've tilled thoi rsacks for the evening? Make it a repast that takes place while loot is being divided by the group Or if they are all on their own, they could meet to com pare treats. Most youngster* organize their own costumes. But little tots will need some assistance from Mom. A witch's hat is easy to make and fun to wear,"as any little broom rider knows Here's how to make it: Start with a large head-fitting cone from cardboard. Secure edges with tape. Cut a large circle of cardboard about 3 inches wider all around than the base of the cone;. Place the ? cone tin the circle, squeezing slightly so that the base becomes oval to fit the head Trace around it with pencil and cut the oval piece out of the brim with a razor or other implement. Cover the cone and brim with aluminum foil, securing with tape. Kit the cone into the brim and tape the two together. Decorate it with stars cut from black mat paper. Serve a good hot corn and tomato chowder with some pumpkin crackers. Combine one 303 size can of cream style corn with one 303 siac can tomatoes, 1 eafi frozen potato soup and frankfurters. You can get the tiny ones in the can or cut up the large size hot dogs. Add one soup can Of water, heat through and serve the youngsters in mugs. This recipe should make ii bowls or 8 mugs of soup. Spread round crackers with processed cheese and decorate them with slices of stuffed olives and green pepper. If you have time cut out bits of the olives and peppers to make a pumpkin face over the cheese. Ghost Town Buyer COLORADO SPRINGS. Colo (APi ? T. K Smith has bought himself a ghost town for $551.25. Farmers in this area won't believe their eyes if they happen to spot a couple of critters on the loose in these parts. ' A truck carrying an animal shipment to Chicago overturned, and two coatimondis escaped. They're cousins of the raccoon family, but have long snouts that give them an appearance similar to that of the anteater. | State of North Carolina Department of State PRELIMINARY ?
