Psalm 95:6. ^imd|^^5oor) The Shepherd Psalm GOD S PROTECTING CARE REVEALED ' IN DAVID S WORDS Scripture?Paalm tS. I By NEWMAN CAMPBELL THIS LOVELIEST of all the psalms reveals to us how in his life King David experienced God's protecting care, His resto ration of soul, guidance in living, and joy in companionship with his Maker. David had not led an easy exi<^ice. His life had been in daJB when King Saul grew jeaiWs of him and tried first to kill him, and then drove him into hiding because of his wrath. He had met temptation and had ; yielded, but, repentant, had gained the Lord's forgiveness. He had experienced great grief, as ! when his son Absalom rebelled : against him and was slain. So David knew the heartaches of life as well as its joys, but i through it all he could still relie on his God and trust in Him. 1 "The Lord is my shepherd; I i shall not want." King David had 1 been a shepherd boy and knew i green pastures; He leadeth ma '? beside the still waters. He re storeth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of rigHteousness for His name's sake." Little children love beautiful green pastures and still water in which they can see their faces as well as reflections of the trees, bushes and plants growing on the shore. If very young they may not appreciate the beauties of such a scene as cider persons, but they do feel it, and old and young experience the rest and restoration of soul they bring. Then when illness strikes a member of our family, a dear friend, or ourselves, and we seem to be near to walking "through the valley of the shadow of death," we should "fear no evil," because God ia near us in our grief or panic. He will take us safely across the door of death that may await us, or comfort us in our grief if a dear one goes. MEMORY VERSE ? Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."? Psalm 13:6. how the sheep must be cared for, led to pasture, and to streams for water; how the shepherd must stay with the flocks day and night and guard them in case of attacks by predatory beasts. The sheep must be taught to listen for his voice and to fol low him. It is said to be true that sheep learn to recognize their master's voice and will fol low no other voice that may call to them. There are a number of pass ages in both the Old and the New Testament referring to God as our shepherd: "He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; He shall gather the lambs with His arms, and shall carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those which are with young."?Isaiah 40:11. Jesus saw all humanity as sheep without a shepherd, and "was filled with compassion for them because they were dis tressed and scattered as sheep not having a shepherd." ? "He maketh me to lie down in "Thou preparest a table before me in the pretence of mine ene mies; thou anointeat my head with oil; my cup runneth over.'1 David had experience of God's care when King Saul was seeking to slay him, and he was also anointed by Samuel when Saul was repudiated by God. In olden times priests and kings were anointed, and in a Jewish home a host poured oil on a guest's head as a welcome. Lastly, and most comforting of all, is the last verse; "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." I Would recommend that the older young people who are greatly troubled by world condi tions memoriae this beautiful psalm and repeat It to themselves with faith if they are unable to sleep when they lie down to rest, or when they are tempted to do something that is wrong. I can testify that it gives comfort and strength. But, frankly, it's a good illustration of how a man feels when his nerves are "worn to a frazzle." ? ' w The Church has never claimed that religion is a cure for frazzled nerves. But a man's Christian faith does this for him: It shows him a Purpose in life more important than mere existence. It shows him a Power more effective than his own strength. It shows him a Future more rewarding than selfish gain. And it gives him courage more lasting than the sheer force of his human will. With these spiritual resources, founded in the cer tainty that God understands and helps, a man never reaches "the breaking point." For when his human reserve is exhausted ... he has only begun to tap the vast reservoir of Divine Strength. THE CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE CAN , SHOW YOU THE WAY! " THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship It is a storehouse of spiritual values Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization cgn survive There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the Church They are (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake (3) For the sake of his community and nation (4) For the ,-ake of the Church itself which needs his moral and material support Flan to go to church regu larly and read your Bible daily.
