Perk Up That School Wardrobe NKW LIFE FOR AX OLD SKIRT . . . Colorful sailboat and sea full appliQUcs arc stitched in contrasting bias binding. Wide rick rack braid in two colors is used to simulate ocean waves as color ful edging for the hemline of the skirt. By DOROTHY ROE Anmm iatrd I'ross H omcn'i Editor }> R A C T ICALLY EVERY SCHOOL GIRL has. a wardrobe of I cotton skirts, some of nwhich may be looking a little weary after a season or so of hard wear. A few minutes at the sewing machine can put new life in old;1 skirt-- and brighten them up for,1 the new school term. Local sew- j ing center experts suggest adding colorful appliques lo solid-color 1 skirls, raiding the scrap bag for | fabrics. For example, you-can make a I | plain skirt into a conversation j i ' piece by adding appliques in a , sailboat motif, using simple out lines, with single-foid bias tape tor the sails and wide bias tape tor the hulls of the boats. Sea gulls also may be made from bias tape, stitched in a wide V. Here's another new trick: Take Iwo packages of the very wide (size 29> rickrack in two differ ent colors. Weave the two pieces together, interlocking the points. This makes a single ribbon of trim ming, with alternating colors in diagonal lines. These are only a few sugges tions for effective trimmings. Any bright girl will be able to dream up her own ideas for individual appliques to give old skirts a new lease on life.
