In that state, there are ten to seventeen couples waiting to adopt a baby for every child available for adoption. Babies born to unwed mothers represent the largest single source of chil dren available for adoption. Recent Report Clark E. Vincent's report on a study of "The Adoption Market and the Unwed Mother's Baby" appeared in the May Issue of "Marriage and Family Living." It is based on 409 replies, received in response to the 576 question naires sent to doctors of Alameda County, California, asking for data on the mothers of babies born out of wedlock in 1952. The doctors reported a total of 252 babies born out of wedlock At least 171 of the mothers had never married, 51 had been sepa rated or divorced more than nine months, 30 were married but the baby was fathered by a man not the mother's legal husband. The report is based on the 135 eases for whom the doctors indi cated the disposition of the baby. Of these, 57.7% placed their babies through a doctor or law-! yer, 34 1% kept the baby or gave It to a relative and only 8.2% . ? imc, "rr Jmia placed the baby with an agency. The author concludes that "the higher the financial, professional and educational attainments of the unwed mother?and, hence, presumably, the less in need of financial assistance ? the more she tends to dispose of her baby through a doctor or lawyer. "Moreover, the unwed mother who is older and has more educa tion tends to dispose of her baby through a doctor or lawyer, whereas the mother who Is younger and has less education tends to utilize agency adoption facilities." Social Agencies The author then discusses other (actors as, limited information the unwed mother has about so cial agencies; methods, attitudes and skill of social workers; belief of the unwed mother she might have more to say about the choice of foster parents when the baby is placed "independently." The unwed mother and her parents should know that serv ices are available through the local social agencies. And doctors and lawyers of high ethical . standards should help them get this Information. The Salvation Army and simi lar organizations do make such ? Information available. < in* ar*41e?t?. 1m. i a Donna Lynn Morrow Has Birthday Party Mrs. Donald Morrow entertained tier small daughter.
