Mountaineer Boys Win, As Girls Tie At Fines Creek After getting tripped up last Saturday night in their opener j against Murphy, the Waynesvillej Mountaineers found the right j formula at Fines Creek Tuesday I night and won over the White. Hornets, 55-33. The Waynesville girls, however, had to settle for a 23-23 tie in a close defensive battle. , In the boy's contest. Fines Creek i jumped off to an 8-0 lead before Waynesville broke the ice. How ex er. the Mountaineers got moving in time to go ahead at the end of the first quarter, 13-10, and then Widen their lead at the half. 32 22. The count at the end of the third quarter was 48-29. Co-captain Tom Snarks led the Mountaineer attack with a fine 23 point performance. The team's oth er co-captain, Carroll Hooper, con tributed 13 more points to "the WTHS cause. Again the high scor er for Fines Creek was diminu tive Ronald Fish with 17 points. In the girls' game, Waynesville i??-? . _ _? _l seconds to go, but Anna Jean Led ford of Fines Creek hit a free throw* then dumped in a quick lay up to tie up the scnre. State regulations give coaches of girls' teams the choice of play ing off a tie or agreeing to let the deadlock stand. Both coaches de i dined to send the game into an i overtime. The tie probably can be attribut ed to the fact that Waynesvilte's high scorer, Agnes Koberson. who often hits in the 30's, was held to only eight points Tuesday night ? the lowest total in her three yoars i of varsity play. Dickie Nichols" 10 points was ; the highest in the WT11S column, i while L.ois Hunter was tops for 1 the Fillies with eight. ! Waynesvilte's next game is Fri day night at Crabtree-lron Duff.
