Under the supervision of Mrs. ?Rufus Siler, lunchroom director, five such programs have already been held in Haywood, and others are planned. Xj^^ast one at the Crabtree i school, with 75 attend ing, included Miss Mildred Barry, nutrition consultant of the State Board of Health, who pointed out the need of such a state-wide pro gram as soon as possible. Also vis iting from out-of-t he-county was Miss Christine Herring, Asheville city school lunchroom supervisor who acclaimed the program as one of the finest projects yet under taken, and one which showed 100 per cent cooperation between all groups in such a plan. Fred Safford, principal, presided, with all the faculty being present. A turkey dinner was served by the lunchroom staff. Mrs .Margaret Noland, member tf the staff, started looking at the '? school 20 yejirs ago when the first lunchroom was opened in a small ? wooden room, and 10 students were i served. Now about 165 are served : daily. 1 Mrs. Myrgle James has been a member of the staff about 10 years. I Others speaking at. the meeting besides Mrs. Siler and Miss Barry, included Mrs. Grace Stamey and Mrs. Belle Ratcliff, teacher super- 1 visors. The theme of the general plan is "To contribute to the total growth of the child through the use of the lunchroom as a learning situation.'' Mrs. Siler discussed "Why a Lunchroom"; Mrs. Kubye Bryson1 of the County Health Department' spoke on "How does your school < child grow in Haywood County". The Lunchroom?- a road map I to health, was presented by Mrs. I Ratcliff. and Mrs. Stamiy of Waynesville, supervisors in the Waynesviile Elementary and High School respectively. Mrs. Siler pointed out that, "We want our school child to be physic ally fit. mentally alert, and morally sound. We felt that the lunchroom may be used as a learning situation to help make him just that way.' , She discussed the National School Lunch Act and explain j{l how this act provides 3? 4, 5 or ti i cents for all children who want to eat. and at the same time re- i quires each community to provide a lunch for those who cannot pay. , In this way the 20 cents each i child pays for his lunch is divided to pay for those who cannot pay. But in spite of excellent lunch room facilities and personnel. Mrs. Siler stated, "problems still exist. , such as poor participation. chil-J dre not eating the food prepared.) bad manners, untidy habits, chil-1 dron coming to school without< breakfast, and sometimes the sell- j ing of candy and soft drinks near i the school. "We decided one way we might try to solve these problems was to have meetings such as this! and let the public know our poli- : cies and what we are striving to | do and ask for cooperation. "Our goal is to give the child j back to you, the community, a ! happy, healthy, and Wise individu-I al ready to take his place in build- ' ing a better place to live."
