OLD ENGLAND WAY OF DECORAT ING?There's many an evergreen appropriate for decorating the house, inside and outside, for ' Christmas. The spicy or fragrant needled evergreens, fir, spruce, pine, cedar, and hemlock are the traditional favorites. Sor.'e of the modern decorators are using the broadleaved greens in a most ef fective way. An Old English superstition is responsible for greens being placed over the hearth 'to assure prosper ity and health for the coming year. The homes in Old England are dec orated with holly, bay, rosemary and fir. Ivey is not used during the Christmas season. It's banned entirely. Greens are placed on Christmas Eve and left until | Twelfetb Night, when they are I burned. And then they are replac ed with boxwood bough. GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS?Here are a couple of labor-saving ideas to help: Clean your silver several days before the holidays. Apply silver polish and then rub lengthwise, not in a cir cular motion. Use a brush or skew er covered with cloth for cleaning crevices. Wash in soapy water and dry?then coat with paste wax and polish. POLISHING?Speaking of pol ishing, why not save worn-out ny lon hose and socks ? use slightly damp with clear warm water and he slightest pressure ? they are nagic cleaning cloths for painted surfaces, walls and appliances. Most of the college students vlll be home at the same time and will have two wonderful weeks to renew old acquaintances. The Home Economics Depart ment is beginning to look like Christmas. The second-year stu dents are busy making decorations I for the rooms while the flrst-year 1 students are planning refreshments for our Christinas party. Invitations were sent out to the parents this week. We are expecting a big crowd of parents to visit us on Tuesday, December 1*,' The chorus had Its first prac tice in the gym for the conceal last Friday night. Mr. Isfey,- along with Libby Smathers and her commit tee. has done some real hkfd woik on tin? action part of the concert. The band and orchestra have had a lot of practices ahd have work ed hard. The music students at* ftpw soiling tickets. They are cents for students and 60 centa for adults. They will fee cheaper to buy from the students than to buy them at the door. The concert will be held in the gymnasium Friday night. December 14th. This will be the night of open house. Tuesday senior high assembled In the gymnasium to sing Christ mas carols. Several members of the chorus sang special numbers. The boys' quartet did a couple of numbers, which the student body seemed to enjoy very much. We all enjoyed this assembly very much since we have very few of them. This gives us a chance to see the student body and become aware of the talent that we have in our school. Mr. Bowles made several an nouncements of interest to the Sen iors. The students who plan to at tend Woman's College. N. C. State or the University of North Carolina will take a test at Lee Edwards High School Saturday. We are all very proud of Jim Hall. He is a finalist in the Merit Scholarship Test, The basketball team won their first double-header Friday night at Crabtree-Iron Duff. The girls won 35-28 and boys won 59-43 Agnes Roberson and Dickie Nich ols were the high scorers for the girls and Jenkins, Sparks and Wright were the boys' high scor ers. The team is still doing good They won another doubleheade Tuesday night with Brevard. Th girls won 43-30 and the boys wo 41-35. We hope both teams wil keep up the good work. Individual Pot Roast 2 lbs. boneless beef chuck V* C? flour 1V? tsp. salt ^6 tsp pepper 1 T. shortening 1. bay leaf, crumbled V6 tsp. oregano C. sliced onion Vi C. water Cut beef into six Individual serv ings. Coat with mixture of flour, salt and pepper, and brown in shortening Add bay leaf, oregano, sliced onion and water. , Cover and simmer for IVi to 2 hours or until meat is tender. Serve with buttered noodles and gravy. Oven Fried Chicken Melt 1/3 cup butter or margarine in shallow baking pan. Place on coated pieces of frying chicken, skin side down, in pan. Bake, un covered, in 425* oven for half an hour. Remove chicken from oven. Season with salt and pepper, and turn. Return chicken to oven and continue baking for 20 to 30 min utes, until chicken is tender. Creole Pork Steaks Coat pork steaks with 2 table spoons flour combined with 1 tea spoon salt. Place in preheated skil let containing a little fat. Brown steaks slowly. Add contents of 1 (8-ox.) can tomato sauce com bined with Va cup catsup, 2 tablespoons chopped green pepper and 1 table spoon chopped onion.
