BECK Soil Conservation Service Last week I took pictures of the woodland improvement cutting Mark Ferguson had just completed on a three-acre tract on Fines Creek. Mr. Ferguson had removed some 40 crooked, defective, undesirable trees so as to give the young pop lars, walnuts and oaks a chance to grow fast. There must be over 40 straight young poplar trees left by Mr. Ferguson that are six to ten inches in diameter and just ready to start growing real money. Most of the wood removed in the 40 logs will be sold as pulpwood Yet, Mark says he will have a few nice logs to saw for use around the farm making repairs and doing the never-ending building that a farm requires. Several farmers in Haywooc County are considering making use of the Conservation Reserve of the Soil Bank for tree planting on steep land and for building ponds on cropland. Planting trees on these real steep hills is good land use, according to G rover Ferguson of Fines Creek. He and his two boys own stands of white pine, both planted and those that came from natural seedings. All three are proud of the fast-growing white pine timber. If a farmer elects to plant trees under the Soil Bank it must be on land that he has been cultivating. 1 The government will cost-share 80 per cent of the cost of seedlings ' and planting, plus $10 rent each 1 year, through a contract period of 1 ten years. 1 If a farmer elects to build a farm pond on cropland the cost sharing schedule is a little more 1 complicated. It is 80 per cent of > the cost up'to $025, 40 per cent of the cost from $625 to $1,000 and 20 per cent of the cost in excess of $1,000. provided that in no case shall the cost-sharing exceed $1, 500. If water is backed over non-crop land the basis for cost-sharing is reduced by the percentage of the non-cropland under water Water storage contracts are for a five-year period. If a farmer "banks" land under the Conservation Reserve, he must reduce his basic crop acreage by the acreage placed in the Soil Bank I for the entire contract period. Also, , neither idle land nor other acre- \ age can be brought Into produc tion of "basic" crops during the contract period. Soil Supervisor D, J. Boyd sug gests that farmers who are inter ested in using the Soil Bank pro gram to further their conservation farming. fir$t contact the County ASC office for complete explana tions of that program. Conservation farmers know that stable manure, disked into tneir row crop land, is a big help in mak ing high yields. It also helps con trol erosion. The erosion control ling effect of stable manure has fin ally been measured'and the saving of soil is surprising. A 16-ton ap plication on an Iowa cornfield '9 per cent slope) reduced loss of soil by 77 per cent and the rainwater runoff by 63 per cent. In Ohio, 80 years of systematic manuring of light-colored soil saved 170 tons of soil materia^ per acre, or over two tons per year. IAFF - A ?
