lip''' liblc^orbsT^^ i ROMANS 7:15 ?"For I do not do what I want, but I do the verv thing I hate." (RSV) ... A man invited into the control room of a large mod ern airplane was amazed at dozens of dials, indicators and delicate instruments provided for the safety and control of the great ship of the air. Especially fascin ating was the gyro-compass steadily pointing the dir ection unaffected by surrounding influences. But surprisingly enough, there was also an old-fash ioned'magnetic compass. It was explained that the gyro-compass, though not affected by its environment, is controlled by a power within itself which gradually changes and has to be corrected occasionally by the magnetic compass. The lalter, though temporarily af fected by surrounding magnetic Influences, is subject to the earth's unchanging, (ar away'pole. Everyone needs that power within himself, called will, to guide his life. But one's will alone is not a safe guide. We all need the constant guidance of the divine jpower outside and beyond ourselves. Daily prayer and meditation serve to correct our wills by the will of God and to keep us on the true course. JOHN- HAS A VISION OF THINGS TO COME WHEN THE OLD WORLD HAS PASSED AWAY Scripture?Revelation 21. Ey NEWMAN CAMPBELL WE HAVE now come to the last chapter of our Bible, written by the last of the apostles, John. He was on the island of Patnos, in the Aegean sea. Dr. Wilbur M. Smith calls this chapter "One of the most exalted, glorious, radi antly beautiful chapters of all the Bible." St. John writes: "And 1 saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed aw^ and there was no more sea. Ar^P John, saw the Holy City, nev^Kjerusalem, coming down fro^jod out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her hus band." Probably even the youngest of the Sunday school pupils has seen a bride dressed for her wedding, and looking her loveliest, to meet her bridegroom. "And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, will be thrilled with John's de scription of the jasper walls, "clear as crystal." of the great wall with its 12 gates guarded by 12 ang?ls. the 12 foundations of the wall on which were the names of the 12 apostles. There was no temple In the great city, for there was no need, for God and His Son, the Lamb, ruled there to be worshiped. The city was pure gold, and the 12 gates were of 12 pearls; "every gate was of one pearl." . ... "And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it; for the glory of God' did lighten it, and the Lamb (Jesus) is the light thereof." "And the nations of them that are saved shall walk in the light of it; and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honor into it. "And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day; for there shall be no night there. "And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that de MEMORY VERSE "God Himself shall be toiffc them, and be their God; and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death."?Revelation tt:S, 4. and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying:, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former thing's are passed away. "Atid He that sat upon the throne said. Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me. Write: for these words are true and faithful." "And He said unto me. It is done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end (these are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet). I will give unto him that is athirst of the foun tain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be My son." We have not space to describe in all details this beautiful city which God shall create for His children, but the younger chil dren as well as the older ones. fileth, neither whatsoever work* 1 eth abomination, or maketh a \ : lie; but they which are written in | the Lamb's book of life." Dr. Smith quotes the words of j the late Mr. Scott about the stones that composed this great city, as follows; "Amongst precious stones the jasper and sardius are remark* able for their brilliancy. These hard and indestructible gems are fit emblems of lncorruption in | the glorified state. The blue 'wavy colors of the rainbow' in , the one, and the red of the other are flashed out in wondrous | beauty." This beautiful city was larger than any city on earth today. Dr. Smith has computed the number I of people who may inhabit It to be a hundred thousand million. When will it come? No one knows, but wouldn't you and your families like to be eligible to live in it? And how happy and com forted the apostle must have felt after he was given this vision of I the Holy City! Some like to rejoice in the calm of today and give no thought to the clouds of to morrow. Theirs is a contentment without strength, a happiness empty of hope. Put stronger souls see both the calm and the clouds. And they look beyond the clouds to the Light whose rays bathe the horizon. These are the souls who face the new year with faith in their God. They know the days will not be without shadow. The ripples may sometimes become angry breakers. But they follow the gleam across another year . . . the Gleam from beyond the clouds.
