The growth of the Carolina di-1
vision of the Champion Paper and
Fibre Comr.ny was discussed at
a meeting of the Waynesvllle
Lions Club by John M. Barnes
manager of the industrial and
community relations department at
the Canton plant.
The founding and early develop
ment of the Carolina division was
described by Mr. Barnes this way.
"Half a century ago, Peter G
Thomson needed a pulp mill to
supply me paper mill of the
Champion Coat.-d Paper Company
at Hamilton. Ohio Instead of fol
lowing toe trend of that day of
looking to the North, he envision
ed the potentialities of the South
as a source of pulpwood and a site
for a pulp mill.
"Canton, N. (', was selected bc
cause of the combination of tim
ber supply, Intelligent labor, suit
able water, and accessibility to oth
er essential processing materials
and to markets.
"Pioneering the industry In the
South, construction started in 1906
and in HK)8 the Champion Fibre
Company started shipping pulp
wood to Ohio
"This was the first mill in the
world to make white pulp from
chestnut wood, first to produce
high quality white pulp from
Bouthernpine trees, and, first to
manufacture bleached hardwood
pulp from the sulphate process.
"The Carolina mill began manu
facturing paper in 1922. I his plant
now has four pai>er machines, in
cluding thi two largest in tie
world for making white pa pels,
producing 47b tons per day; three
paperboard machines producing
225 tons per d.u and one of the
original pulp drying mat hincs
still supplies the Ohio mill with
250 tons of bleached pulp every;
day.

Mr. Barm disclosed that the
normal employment at the Canton
Champion plaid is approximately
2.800. the annual payroll ap
proximately $10 oiio.oou, and tic
annual wood cost is approximately 1
$10,500,000
The speaker told the Lions that
the Champion Paper and Fibre
Company toda) has Imth national
and International scope, comment
ing:
"We have 'district sales offices
In New York, Chicago. Philadel
phia, Detroit, St. Louis, Cincin
nati. Atlanta Dallas and San
Francisco. In addition to these dis
trict offices, we have merchant
subsidiaries in the key cities of
Nashville. Chattanooga, Louisville.
Indianapolis, St, Louis, Chicago,
and Milwaukee. These wholesale
outlets, of course, supplement our
sales organization to a consider-:
able degree.
"We have a number of subsidi
aries. many of which arc wholly
owned. Dairy pa k, which makes the
waxed paperhoard milk cartons
that wo use every day, is a sub
sidiary of Champion. Dairypak has
plants in Athens. Ga . Fort Worth.
Texas. Clinton, Iowa, and Cleve
land, Ohio, From Canton we ship
a large quantity of paperboard to
Dairypak even day, and you can
be sure that paperboard from
many of I he cartons that you drink
milk front was made right here in
Haywood County ? and probably
was made by your own relatives or
friends.
