In? t m in the history of the
WhiWv;.:a tobacco market and
Jut', ii jt from the amount of tobac
co that fcas been brought to this
market on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday this fourth week will
be the banner one of a record
breaking: season. It will .be. bigger
from a poundage standpoint than
the previous week When 3,000,148
pounds of tobacco was sold and
with the market higher than it was
on opening day it will also.be grea
ter from the price : standpoint
When sales close at 6:00 o'clock
Friday afternoon 16,000,000 pounds
will have been sold here, and tq
those growers who have so wisely
selected Whiteville as the place to
sell their tobacco . . , they will
have received nearly two and a half
million dollars. . k ' , v i ' i ' : S ' : 1 '': ; : ' : :-
This treat increase over1, last
years sales is not due altogether
to a larger crop, but more than any
other one thing, to the large hum.
ber of new patrons that have been
attracted by the high prices that
are being paid here. Last week
several new counties were added
to the list of those who have sent
tobacco here since opening week.
Several loads were on the floors
from Guilford and Rockingham,.,.
200 miles away. Moore, Nash, Gran
villa, Franklin, Wake, Lee, Harnett,
ones, Lenoir, Greene, Wayne,
Johnston, Hoke, Cumberland, Dup
lin,-; Pender, Sampson, . Craven,
Brunswick; New Hanover, Colum
bus, Bladen, Robeson, and Onslow
are other North Carolina Counties
that have patronized the Whiteville
market ', while Horry, Berkiy, Wil
liamsburg, and Dorchester are a
mong the South Carolina Counties
that have sent tobacco here. Dur
ing the fifteen marketing days of
the present season, Including Wed
nesday of this week, approximately
8.600.000 pounds of the leaf has
been sold in Whiteville,. It is Im
possible to determine the average
price that has been paid, however
many growers who have sold on
other markets are coming here and
these men state without hesitation
that the Whiteville market la pay
ing higher prices, grade by grade,
than any they have sold on. White
ville has not reported any unbelie
veable averages for any one parti
cular day. Instead this market has
been stable i and eonsistent with
little variation in prices except for
a strong upward trend since open
ing day, bringing them up to what
local tobacconists believe is their
high ' peak.. Stability In prices
means most to the farmer and to-,
bacco growers can always feel con
fident of getting the top market
price every day of the week when
he sells in Whiteville. .
