Pouehkeepsie, N. T,
June 24, 1937.
Editor, Duplin Times.
I read with a great deal of in
terest about the Centennial cele
bration of the Eenansville Bap
tist church. -
Our Baptist brethren have made
a splendid contribution to the
cause of religious freedom. They
founded Bhode Island, which ac
cording to Judge Story was the
first commonwealth dedicated to
real religious freedom "since
Christianity ascended the throne
of the Caesars." That is to say
since Christianity became the' fa
vored religion of the Boman em
pire under Constantine. '
. Of the original thirteen colonies'
only Bhode Island and Pennsyl
vania had no established church.
The second named colony lacked
little of having absolute religious
equality. They did restrict cer
tain privileges to those who ack
nowledged Jesus Christ as Saviour
of the world." '
. The first amendment to the
Federal constitution says: "Cong
ress shall make'; no law respecting
the establishment of ia religion, or
prohibiting the;' free exercise
thereof." At a great .price obtain
ed we this freedom.' Kussia and
Mexico may have no state church,
but they do interfere in Uie free
exercise of religion.
. If I read the signs of the times
aright we need the combined wis
dom of us all to determine the
future- what' is the real 'meaning
of religious freedom.
