(Japtain JAKE3 PEABSALL, son of Edward and Catherine PearsalL was born in the Welch settlement of New Hanover :,5 (now Pender) County during the year 1780. 1 father w eooper and came to the Welch settlement from Chester Connty, Pennsylvania, during the seventeen-forties. ' After the death his father the mother and her children located in the Orove set tiement of Duplin County and she became the wife of Colonel Thomas Boutledge. In the beginning of the Evolutionary War ' Captain Pearsail, like his step-father Colonel Boutledge, became an outstanding American patriot He was an officer in the Dap lin militia and participated in a number of campaigns and en gagements. At the close of the war he received a grant from the State for a tract of one thousand acres of land in Mwiry Coun ty, Tennessee, for military services. ? On January 21, gave deed to Duplin County for four acres of the nurpose of building thereon a ourthouse, prison and stocks and courthouse was built n the same site as the present build ing. It is said that the acceptance of Captain Pearsall's offer of four acres was largely on account of th "cooL spring", near the square and which is still flowing a steady tream of pure, healthful water. ? The spring had bee duscorered long before that time by Miss Barbara Gaste who later married Captain Beveret, a leaman, and after his death she married Joseph Carr. Many of their descendants have been prominently identified wttft public affairs.? Directly after the war Captain fearsaH was elect Mi Sheriff and served in that capacity for a period f r years. He was a member of the State Constitutional Conven tion of 1789 and represented Duplin County as a member of the State Souse of Commons, sessions of 1791 and Vim.' at was a man of large affairs, a planter, and operated a tavern near the courthouse for many years. '.LL'mJ Captain Pearsail died November 12, 1812, in the sixty-third year of his age. Ha married first Zilphia UsneU, daughter of Thomas and Catherine UzaelL of Dobbs (Lenoir) County; second Peraby Whitfield, daughter of Barbara (Williams), and .Con stantine Whitfield, of Craven County; and. third Anne Dickson, : daughter of Jane (Molten) and Joseph Kcksoiui jae children by tte firrt marriage were': (1) JAMES ?erv- . ed as Clerk' of the County Court for a period of "f; years.
