Stan of "Can You Top This?"
Try to Outdo Each Other
Mention any subject at all and
Senator Edward Ford. Mnrrrf
Hershfield andJoe LaUrie, Jr., the
three wits of radio's famed 'Can
xou Top This?" show, are sup
posed to come right back with
a ' pertinent - joke or stbry. The
Games Dog Research Center, New
York City, thought it would test
them out by asking each of .the
trio for his favorite dog tale. All
three responded .promptly, with
the following; results.
SENATOR EDWARD FORD
f" "Smart Dog
Some, of the fellows were sit
ting around talking about how
smart their dogs were. Finally one
said, "You all think your dogs are
so smart eh? Well, let me tell you
about that dog of mine. Lastyear
we had a fire at our house. There
was confusion all over the olace.
Our faithful ho.und stood with us
watching the firemen. Suddenly,
broke away and ran into the
urnine building. A minute later
he came out In his mouth he car
ried the insurance policy wrapped
in a wet towel."
HARRY HERSHFIELD
"Clayful Pup" ,
A fellow eomplained that he had
mice in his house. He said, "I
don't seem to be able to get rid of
those mice." -
His friend asked, "Have you
tried a dog? Get a rat terrier.
They're marvelous."
So the man bbught a dog. A few
days later the friend stopped in
Ford, Hershfield and Laurie with
Sniejok, a Samsyede.
at his home and saw the dog play
ing frog' and. tag with ths mie.
here?" asked the friend. "What's
this dog playing with these mice
for?"
"Oh, those are our own mice,",
was the reply, "but just let a
.Strange mouse come in here, and
then you 11 see something.
JOE LAURIE, JR.
"So long, Judge"
t Brown was brought into court
for walking a dog without a muz
zle or leash.
"Well," said the judge, "what
have you got to say for yourself?"
of each driver's license. .
uilf ord County ran second to Mec
klenburg with 29 .convictions, fol
lowed by Forsyth and Surrey, with
23 each.
Duplin County was one of 13
counties which had no drunken dri
ver convictions during June.

Fire Law
Is Recommended
A new law in North Carolina
making it unlawful to let out woods
fires before 4:30 p. m. from Febru
ary 15 to -May 15 each year will be
asked of the next legislature by a
committee representing the local
work of Southern States Forestfire
Commission, Inc., is Is announced
in a bulletin sent the Times last
week. "
This amendment to the state
regulation on forest fires is calcu
lated to reduce destruction caused
by fires getting out from new
ground, turnip bed and tobacco
seed beds each Spring. Those who l
are to do any burning will also be '.
lequired to notify three of their
nearest neighbors at least 24 hours !
m aavance, the bulletin states. -
This new protective aid for tim
ber growers has already been en
acted by the Virginia Legislature,
and automobile bumper signs to
warn one and all have been distri
buted by the State Foresters, and
which has been the means of saving
hundreds of thousands of acres
from destruction, the statement
further avers.
Much ol the burning in this state
is due to belief 6f some farmers
that better grazing results and that
the grass grows more quickly in
the Spring. Such beliefs are disap
pearing due to ' discovery by cattle
raisers that burnt over pasture gets
tough quicker in late Spring and
early Summer. Grass in some sage
and undergrowth remains partial 'y
hidden from the sun and air, and
thereby stays , tender . for cattle
longer, the Commission further
says in the announcement.
All members of the Southern
States Forestfire Commission in
this area have been asked to con
tact their legislators and Senators
in behalf of the new measure.
