West Phone 2696 Warsaw, N.C. 0000006600000000000000000 By Mrs. WendeU WUlklo Two and a half yean ago, when newsreeu exposing tne unueuev able horrors of Nazi concentration camps were shown in theatres throughout the United States, single thought came into the minds of all of us "This must never happen again!" We now have the opportunity to put this conviction into action by supporting the United Nations in its protests against such bar barism. The UN Secretariat has finished drafting the Convention for the Prevention and Punish ment of Genocide, the deliberate wiping out of a race or group of human beings. Under the terms of the Conven tion being considered by the General Assembly at Lake Suc cess, individual countries would be given the power to seize and punish any criminals guilty . genocide who are captured B their territory. An International Criminal Tribunal, similar to tht Nuremberg Tribunal, may also be set up to punish flagrant cases of the crime. There can be no question in our minds as to the vital need for this pact. The persecution of minori ties is like an infectious disease; it is seldom confined to a single group of victims. In Germany, Hitfer did not stop with the per secution of the Jews. One by one, Catholics, Protestants, trade union ists and all liberal Germans were suppressed by the Nazis. But here in America we have always felt the necessity for pro tecting the rights of minorities and for the strengthening of their basic human rights. Wendell Will kie I think very aptly expressed this thought when he said: "It has always Impressed me I1 N - ' Mrs. Wendell WUlkle that miifo nnart from anv reasons Of tgimanitarianism or justice or any sentiment regarding the pro testfcm of the weak by the strong, It only common sense to safe guard jealously the rights of mi norities. For minorities are ncn assets of a democracy, assets which nn totalitarian government can afford. Dictatorships must, of ne cessity, fear and suppress tnem. Rut within the tolerance of a democracy, minorities are the con stant spring of new ideas, stimu lating new thought and action, the constant source of new vigor." : , We cannot afford to let down now, even though the wartime pictures have faded somewhat from memory- Rather we must tell our representatives to give their immediate, run support w th na;ipp and enforcement of tho Convention to Outlaw Geno cide, and must encourage others to do likewise.
