RLW Aims for "Every Dog a Gentleman Life with Fido should yield added joys for many thousands of dog-owners as the result of pub lication by the Gaines Dog Re search Center, 250 Park Avenue, New York 17, N. Y., of a free booklet called "Every Dog a Gen tleman." x The booklet, issued as part of the "canine courtesy" movement fostered by the Center, essentially is a national directory of classes and clubs ottering dog obedience training. It is intended primarily for those dog-owners who for any reason require help in the training of their pet. The list covers 143 clubs and classes in 123 commu nities in 31 states, and in each case gives the name and address of the person to be contacted. For dog owners who live in communities where there is no active training group, Or who prefer to do their own training, the Center has a list of recommended books on dog training which is also available without cost. In a foreword to "Every Dog a Gentleman," Harry Miller, direc tor of the Center, attempts to clear up some common misunderstand ings about dog obedience training. "The belief that discipline is pun ishment and may break a dog's spirit is a mistaken one," he states. "Most dogs actually enjoy their training sessions and take pride in going through the lessons they have learned. The impression that obedience work is a 'bag of tricks' is also wrong. Obedience training makes it possible for the owner to control his dog at all times, but it does not make a dog a circus performer. Nor is it necessary for the owner to have any special talent or genius in order to teach a dog the rudiments of good con duct. Patience and commonsense arg required on the part of the owner, but under the direction of an experienced trainer in charge of a class, the correct methods are simple to learn and can be easily adapted to suit the individual dog. is currently aiding its members in realizing the full potential useful ness ana pleasure of owning their dogs by offering detailed clans ana directions ior the construe tfono' dog cart A full grown St Bernard, in good condition, is capable of pulling loads up to 250 'lbs.
